Anyone have any suggestions on how to help constipation? I'm pretty sure that it's the Losec that's causing it as we're not using a thickened formula.

I'm pretty sure that it's the Losec that's causing it as we're not using a thickened formula. Janette 04-13-2005, 10:13 PM Evan has been on Losec since he was 19 months and has never been constipated. He has a large amount of apple sauce twice a day. I also give him lots of watered down juice as well as milk. Hopefully someone else can help you with constipation remedies. zapsmom 04-14-2005, 10:57 AM You could see if it is okay you put some Colace in his bottle. It is just a stool softer but it can help. My daughter was very constipated. It helped abit. Shannon Becky in NM 04-14-2005, 01:17 PM Daniel had a really bad constipation phase last summer when spent a week wtih my family, and it think it was caused by putting different water in the formula. Nothing else had changed because he was still on 100% formula at the time. I've read here that certain formulas have made some of the kiddos constipated, so that could be a factor, too. EmmasMommy 04-15-2005, 12:13 AM Our ped suggests two things if Emma hasn't "gone" in 48 hours.... Fortunately we haven't had to use either of these methods yet... 1. Take a rectal temp. Not the most pleasant experience, but at least it's not having to give them a suppository or medicine to "go"... Apparently, doing the rectal temp gives the kids the urge to "push" 2. There is a recipe for brown sugar water....I think it's 1 tablespoon in 1 ounce of water. You may want to check around online about the exact amount, but that's what our ped tells us to use...it takes a little while longer....I think 6 hours or so.....like I said I would check online for the exact recipe..I would hate to tell you the wrong thing! Zander's Mum 04-15-2005, 12:45 AM I checked with the ECHN today & she said to just give him 50ml (I think thats 1oz) of water during the day. Will start trying it today. Janette 04-15-2005, 09:25 AM 30 mL is 1 oz, so 50 mL is nearly 2 oz. Nathan'sMommy 04-15-2005, 01:09 PM If the water doesn't work, prune juice diluted with water (50/50) worked well for us. sarahh 04-15-2005, 10:24 PM SOrry to hear about the constipation. Good luck with the cooled boiled water trick. I know my boys always spat it out. I went with the brown sugar in the water and they took this. My midwife also suggested adding a touch of formula to the water, to "trick" them into thinking they were having a feed...they didn't take that either. The prune juice would be the other option. Failing all of the "natural" rermedies, I guess it would be meds. Unfortunately constipation is common with reflux due to the meds they take. sixdogssixcats 04-15-2005, 10:44 PM When Catherine was totally constipated, I added an extra half ounce to two of her formula bottles to get the extra ounce into her. She didn't notice the difference. It never occured to me to give her plain water in a bottle! Zander's Mum 04-17-2005, 06:09 PM Well he's gone from constipated to having 6 dirty nappies in 1 day!! There is no middle ground with this little guy. Becky in NM 04-17-2005, 08:39 PM  Yeah, it's always the extremes! Nathan'sMommy 04-17-2005, 11:34 PM You poor thing! :) I remember when my ds was 1 mo old, he used to poop with every feeding. We would be right in the middle of breastfeeding, and like clockwork, he would leave me a surprise (10x a day). Sorry you are changing so many yucky diapers, but I guess that is better than little guy being constipated! :D Zander's Mum 04-18-2005, 12:06 AM I would definately prefer to be changing heaps of yucky nappies than having him cry everytime he goes. butterfly 04-20-2005, 12:59 AM I found from my mom that chamomile tea does wonders & it is working for us. Our little girls is not eating enough & hate to give her plain water (she wouldn't take prune juice), so what I do - if she hasn't pooped for couple days I substitute 1/2 bottle of water (before making formula) with the tea and believe it or not - she poops in the next couple hours and is happy again. mommy_dearest 05-27-2005, 10:32 PM A few ounces of juice is what our ped told us...It is a natural softner...It worked great for us.. |
