Eric has always been stuffed up. The docs say it's from the reflux, which it is, but shouldn't I be treating IT too?

Are there any others with a chronic stuffy child? Should I be worried about infection, or anything else? Could he have had a blockage problem all this time? He was born stuffy

It's just the docs are so flip about it, and I took their lead. Now my family is asking why? Of course they all think THIS is the reason for Eric's funny eating, and "fixing" his nose will solve all the problems. NO I don't think they are right, but maybe it could help things?

Minnie,

Catherine frequently sounds congested, and we suction her nose regularly. She vomits through her nose quite a bit so there's often formula up in there. I'm convinced that's the cause of the sinus infection she has right now. She won't eat because she has to breathe through her mouth. She's on a decongestant which helps for a little while but you can really tell when it starts to wear off.

You're right that "fixing" Eric's nose won't solve all of the problems, and that it might help. I've given Evan an antihistamine from time to time to help. The ped. said not to use a decongestant b/c it's not a cold, more of allergy type symptoms and irritation from the reflux. He has has a nasal spray that works wonders, as well as 2 puffers. We had to see a pediatric respirologist to get the correct puffers and dosages, as well as the nasal spray.

That was our first symptom. We have had 5 sinus infections in 7 months. It was their biggest concern before our new hurdles. They say it is becuase they reflux so high it can go into the sinuses. I know from my docs that it is not good to have that many infections and it can hurt their little noses but thats about it. They gave me no suggestions really. I am so sorry you are dealing with it. It is really hard to listen to them trying to breathe.

How would I know if there was a sinus infection? The snot would be yellow right? There never is any, just food. At least what I always thought was food because it looks like thick or thin formula, if anything comes out at all. Usualy nothing comes out, even when he cries. It just sounds like a nose goblin party in there all the time. I remember when I still didn't know what was going on I bought some drops, and the only thing that suctioned out was the drops themselves. LOL I bought 5 different nose asperators thinking they weren't working right.

It does get worse when his reflux is flaired up (Like right now URGGHHHHH!). And when things seem under control, there's still a party going on in there, but sounds like some of the guests have gone home, and he can breath through it. I always thought that there was nothing I could do about it, and that it was nothing to worry about.

Would he have a fever from it? He's never had a fever except after shots.

Catherine only had a temp of 100.1 and no visible snot when she went to the ped a few days ago and was diagnosed with a sinus infection. We suction her nose frequently and only get out a little of what looks like formula, too. However, the ped stuck the nose sucker in up to her brain, lol, and pulled out all kinds of crud. There may be a lot more up in Eric's nose than you realize.

Hummmm?

He rubs his forehead on the floor a lot. Like between the eyes, and has done this for as long as I can remember. He also rubs his nose a lot. This one is fairly new because of his developement. Sometimes he'll rub really hard on my shoulder. I always chalked it up to teething.

Well,
I'm going to bring it up to the doctors, and start adressing the issue. It'll probably take a few months before they actualy listen, but I've got to get the ball rolling sometime. Not that we never talked about it before. I think it's been brought up at every appointment, except the one where all I did was yell. LOL

The GI also mentioned treating his nose. He asked if we were doing anything for it, and I just said "no." End of subject

Catherine rubs her face back and forth - almost like a scrubbing motion - into my shoulder all the time pretty forcefully. She'll also bang her head into my shoulder, and she's gotten me in teeth a few times, which was not a pleasant experience for either of us! I always chalked it up to stress relief because she does it more when she's tired, but maybe it does have something to do with sinus pressure.

Zoee was always stuffy in the nose. I always thought that it was her sinus but our  doctor always told me that babies ' sinus are not developed at this age so no it can't be. Her snot was bright yellow and green at times. I have to say that since we started the Zantac for her, the stuffy has gone away. now if we can just get hte ear infections is go as well.

Braydon is also rubbing his face "back & forth" into my shoulder (and his mom's). We just started noticing it about a week ago, so we are going to bring it up to the pediatrician tomorrow. I will let you know what "he" thinks might be causing Braydon to do this.

My daughter Elana has a chronic stuffy nose. Her nose has never "run". She is now 3 and we started using a nasal saline rinse that is great. She hates it (and I don't blame her) but it really gets all the mucus out. You spray water in one nostril and it clears out the other side. Then you spray the other nostril and the other side gets cleaned out. She had a CT scan of her sinuses done a few months ago to make sure there weren't any blockages. The CT scan did show chronic sinusitis and the nasal rinses and steady antibiotic treatment is really helping.

Since she is 3, the doctor is really pushing for us to do a fundo b/c she is still aspirating into her lungs. I wonder if the fundo will help clear up her sinus issues????

If the nose problems are caused only by reflux I think that it would help a lot.

Thanks for posting to this thread.
This was an old thread of mine (over a year old I think), and reading it brought a lot back. I found out just recently that it wasn't actually nasal congestion. It was laryngomalacia the whole time. He does get a little runny from time to time still after eating/drinking, but I think it's more from the way he eats and drinks than actual reflux now.
