My daughter tends to grunt/groan and make sounds like she's clearing her throat, usually after the 4/5am feeding, and it makes me nuts. I can't sleep while she is doing that but I don't know what to do about it. She is currently on Prilosec and I don't know if it's helping much. Also, it is very hard for me to try and keep her upright for 30 mins after eating during middle of the night feedings. It's one thing during the day, but how do you do this at night when you are exhausted and just want to sleep? Also, I started doing diaper changes before she eats so I don't lay her down after she eats, anyone else do this or have other advice??

I always had to hold Eli upright on bad nights, and grunting and groaning are common with reflux..... :D Sorry and (((hugs)))

My little guy was a massive vomiter with none of the grunting. I used to nap in a cosy chair in the middle of the night, holding him. I was lucky to get between 2 and 3 hours of sleep per night for weeks at a time. Can you elevate the head of the change table or change pad somehow? I think that there might be an ad somewhere on this site for a change pad like that. Roni would probably know.

Yes, click on the link for the pollywog baby ads in my signature or at the top of the forum index...there is a changing table incliner there that looks really great! I so wish we would have had one when Shae was a baby.

Oh yeah, we did the diaper change just before feeding him, too. What was bad was when you heard/smell him go during the bottle, so you knew you had to lay him down again anyway!

My son who is 5 weeks old also grunts and groans and he does it all night long, it is really hard to sleep because I always feel like maybe he's in pain so I always check on him. I aked my dr and she said it could be something to do with the reflux or just somthing he does but after checking with others it sounds like a possible reflux thing.
I have a changing pad and have put blankets under it to raise the head when I change him. I also try and hold him upright for 30 minutes but late night its really hard and I usually try as long as possible so it sounds like were going through the same thing, hopefully someone will have some advice fir us! I always change before feeding at night. Catherine usually feeds herself back to sleep so I wouldn't want to wake her up by changing her. She sleeps so poorly as it is.

Hi there!
My boys used to grunt and groan and make weird nosises, even full-on crying but were fast asleep!! I always change them before feeds otherwise Matthew does the projectile vomitting thnig...he does enough of that as it is. They are now 14 weeks old but in those earlier days, they were 3 hourly feeding and taking 2 hours to feed..so that meant about 1- 1 1/2 hours sleep in between. It was very hard going. I have the cot elevated and I would just hold them upright after their feed until I felt them relax and then would put them down. Matthew very rarely burps so I can't rely on that to know his wind is gone. Anyway, (((HUGS))) as sleep deprivation is the most awful thing.
