I was just wondering if anyone had used homeopathy to help assist with the sypmtoms of reflux in their babies/children?? I got some "baby calm" today from a homeopathic shop- I got it really in case the boys become distraught while we are flying. (Oooh only 3 more sleeps until we go). They also had a product called "colicmed" which is supposedly to help infants with colic or reflux. Has anyone tried this out?? Does it work??

What's in it Sarah?

We have tried all those things (I don't mean those exact products just similar things) with Shae and nothing helped but that doesn't mean they may not help some kids.

We're using natural things with Evan, too. We use glyconutrients. I think they're working, b/c he has been worse when we're run out before the next shipment.

I tried natural remedies too with no luck. I ordered gripe water over the internet (Baby Bliss and Nurse Harvey's), but they didn't seem to make a difference. :(

i got some calming things for alex (look at my signature LOL)

ive been using holistic medicine for years. i got into an accident and hurt my back and nothing helped. then i saw a holistic healer and i am so much better now.. N E WAY...

i have given alex chamomile, which sooths the esophagus... it has the same healing propurties at aloe. but is less harsh and works much better...

some people say that natural remedies do nothing. some take longer than others.. just depends on what u use. i use teething capsules for alex. they took 3 uses for them to start to work... some things take a while cuz they need to be introduced in the body first and the body needs to accept them.

MOST homepathic drugs needs to be take WITH OUT food. it is best to ask a naturpath first. most cost 100 for hte first appointmetn. they ask u about the health of hte child. eveything. then 50 every appointment there after. SOME insurances will cover so much of holistic health.

WHole FOOds/ Bread and Circus are GREAT stores for homeotherapy. they have people there that know alot... go ask them for advice and for questions. they will tell u what works....

BTW... Rescue Remedy (i got mine at whole foods) is great for everyone in my family. it is a relaxing agent. but it does have a tad bit alchohol in it, so can only be given to baby 3 times a day. i relied on it alot when alex was so colicy. EMAIL me if u have any specific questions. i'd love to help anyone with questions.

We have not tried that route at all, I guess just because I know we haven't yet exhausted all of the traditional medical options. Did you get started simply by doing your own research?

Yes, they said rescue remedy would help too....
I'm not sure what is in the colicmed- herbs & flowers!!! Teehee- I'm just being smart now!!
The baby calm has aconite, chamomilia, cimicifuga and hypercium in it. They told me it wasn't the quantity that mattered but how often you took it. The doses are small but need to be taken frequently- like every 15 minutes for 6 doses or so.
Becky, I just went to the homeopathic despensary and they helped me find the right product. You could always go to a Nautropath as Erin Marie suggests and they can make up remedies for you especially once they have done a full assessment. I just got something "off the shelf". I may try the colicmed if the baby calm is effective. Have to try these things- right??!!!

naturpaths make things yes, but for everyone? no. they will tell u what works and u can go buy it.... i havent seen one in a longtime... i did see a holistic healer a few years ago... they are AWESOME.

also... have u ever rubbed the baby's feet? it works... holistic healers say that nerve endings in the feet are connected to certain parts of the body (heart, throat, stomach, intestines, ect)

it works for alex after i give him a bath...i put some Berts Bees oil in my hand and rub it onto his feet and he giggles a lil b ut then smiles...

when he was colicy...it would calm him..and sometimes...make him call asleep... it doesnt work for everyone. but it can help...

every night i lub him up with cream/oil and give him my own massage... i rub into his skin and he calms down...

Holistic healers are great...ive been thinking of doing it for a while...

they re great for emotional issues... i went through a tough period... and they just help u with everything.. theres nothijng like a message and yoga to relax u

We went wholistic with DS. Born with reflux grew out of it at about a year. We did enzymes and it seem to work for him. But not DD, recently we started her on Aloe Vera. We have seen a remarkable change (well until this flu bug  ). She is even off her meds right now. But we are still not totally convinced because everything works for a time as we all know. Needless to say, my point is, all of these refluxer have reflux for one reason or another. It take trial and error to find the remedie for the reason your child has it. Not as cut and dry as that sounds but, try it, write it down in a log. If it works for a week or so and stops, you have something to come back to in a few months that might work again for a week or so. (frustrating hu?)

As far as flying goes --- Do you know that a few seconds after take off (until presure is stable)and right when you start to feel the presure before landing. every couple of seconds or so, you have to give your babies something to suck on or swallow. When my DD was a few months old we had to use a dropper and we would put a couple of drops of water in her mouth. Just enough to make her swallow. If you don't you will have very uncomfortable babied that will scream bloody murder. The baby in the seats next to us, her parents didn't know this nor did they speak english so no one could tell them what was wrong. I actually got teary for the family. (I'm such a bleeding heart hu? :P )

Have a great trip.

We went this route for awhile with Shae, digestive enzymes, accupressure, some sort of allergy treatments, etc...just ended up spending a fortune on it. I think like anything else, it depends on the child. The one doing the accupressure on Shae told me the same thing about her feet..there was supposed to be a spot on her foot that was connected to her stomach and she told me to rub it if I saw her gag and she'd stop...well it never worked. Or maybe I didn't do it right, I don't know.

Just about two days ago I got an email from a grandmother who said her DIL had gone to a naturopath for her daughter's reflux and the person told her to give the baby goat's milk that it would be easier to digest. Now, this really scared me b/c although the person was right, they didn't tell her that it has too much protein for babies as is, can actually damage their kidneys and is not to be given to babies unless modified (diluted, added carbs, added vitamins, etc). Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing goat's milk, we tried it with Shae actually and she did well, of course, I researched it at the time and mixed it properly. I actually looked into having goat's milk infant formula shipped to me from the UK.

Anyway, I think it's just a lesson to always check out everything thoroughly before starting it.

Roni - our wholistic doc told us to put Connor on goats milk when he was 10 month old. We did for about 4 m. He too seemed to do ok with it until the allergist told us he was allergic to cows milk and goats milk was to similar. Anyway - long story short - No one ever told us about mixing goats milk. How are you suppose to do that?

There's a link in the message above to Dr Sears website which will give instructions on how to safely do it.

It makes me nervous that there are naturopath's recommending this without all the facts, there's way too much protien in goat's milk, it can be dangerous for babies unless it's diluted, but then b/c it's diluted it needs more carbs added.

Wow! That's good to know Roni...I'll have to pass that info. onto my SIL. The baby they're bringing home in May will be going on goat's milk, b/c my SIL's naturopath said that's best.

Sigh, tell her to tell the naturopath to look into it more.

Sadie doesn't have reflux, but she drinks goat's milk formula(from the dr Sears website) a few times a week, when I don't pump enough to get her through the work day. She does way better with it than the occasional formula she was having.

Sue,

They're in the middle of the whole adoption thing and will fly out to China next month to get their new daughter. I've already seen a picture of her, and she's SO cute. She has a chubby little face (if it was really her picture), but only weighs 12 lbs. at 9 months with no health problems (or so they've been told).

Are you thinking of adopting within your country or going abroad?
