Hi everyone and welcome to this new forum! I know that many of you have children 2 years and older who don't speak yet. My son Evan is one of those. He'll be three in a a couple of days, and still has only a couple of words and sounds. At this point, I know that I can't just continue to blame the reflux, that there must be more to it, but without a diagnosis, it's so hard! Anyway, I'd like to hear who else out there has or had non-speakers.

Janette knows that I have a 2 years who will be 3 in May. He has speech delays as well. He doesn't say many words and when he does the word is just said once and that is it. I will not hear it again. I get to hear Mom once every 6 weeks if I am luck. He does like the word "UP" and will say it everyday. The Child Developement Worker thinks that his problem may be more than speech delays. She taped him playing with me and has taken the tape back to the Child Developement Specialist who saw him. I should know more next week. We did think that maybe it is a speech disability, maybe there is a possible he is mildly authism(SP) But Will not know till next week. So it is hard to get him to learn new words because he just kinda humms them. I hope that soon we can get some answers.

Thanks Janette for getting this forum started. it is nice to have some support on this topic as well.

Shannon,

Although we're not considering autism, Evan is similar in that he says words once and we rarely hear them again. I really wish that I could hear Evan call me "Mom" again, but it's just not there anymore. Hopefully one day again and soon! Evan's favourite words these days are "Hi" and "Yuck", which is pronounced "ck", but at least he's using it consistently. He can say "dada" and just relearned the "b" sound this week. I know that this will sound funny, but I'm trying so hard to get him to start calling Brandon "Bubba", as that is a sound that he can say. Unfortunately most people can't understand Evan, and he's beginning to get so frustrated. I've taught him a bit of sign language, but he often forgets the signs, too, even if he has known them for a while. I just wish that we could get past the 4 or so sounds that he can do.

Please let me know what the Child Development Specialist has to say next week.

I know what you mean because I am wishing that Hobbes would get pass the HMMMMMMMMMM. That is literal the way he makes sounds for everything.

Shae said mumumumumumum for everything for years. She was over three before she said anything else and now there are still sounds she can't say. L really gives her trouble, F is another. Luckily for us, she really took to the sign language and it worked like a charm until the words came. And now, the words don't ever stop, she even talks in her sleep. :P

Wow, Roni! Thanks for sharing that! It really gives me hope that Evan WILL talk one day. Right now, everything he tries to say comes out as "dada", except for "hi" and "yuck" of course. He added "s" (pronounced "tssss") to his sounds yesterday and still remembered it with prompting this morning.

I got some really cool cards from the company ABEKA that I use for homeschooling. They are called Language Development cards and they are made to use with your children at home at ages 2 and 3. It is of interesting pics of things going on in the world, colors, things that they are familiar with, shapes, everyday things, and you just sit and talk to him about the pictures and expose them to language associated with a visual consistently. I dont know if it helps but it is fun and not something that is trying to force them to learn to talk but it is just like a fun game to play with them made by speech development professionals. Not trying to sell anything here just excited about this because I just bought it off EBAY and Eli loves it already, it his "school" time with mommy and we just get on the floor and talk about the pic for that day. It gives you visual ideas from around the house to display, lesson plans for the school year, and games you can play that go along with it.

That sounds neat, Erin, and very much like the kind of things that Brandon was able to do at that age. Do you have a website for them?

OK, here is the link, I paid about half this much, I think it is high, I got it on EBAY. Eli has always loved listening to me talk about pictures in the books I would try to read to him so I guess that is why he loves them so much.

Thanks for the link, Erin! That's pretty expensive, though, especially when you translate it into our dollars. It also looks a lot like what I'm already doing when we look at books together.

it is way too expensive, I got mine on EBAY for less than half
