View Full Version : Zantac and Sleeplessness
micky 03-22-2005, 11:45 AM Has anyone had a problem with their baby on zantac and sleeplessness? My grandson Cole sleeps very little during the day and I am sure a while back on a different message board someone wrote that zantac can cause this. Just curious
thanks
ElisMom 03-22-2005, 11:48 AM Hmm, I dont think it will if its agreeing your grandchild. If its not agreeing with him than it may keep him up. My son took Zantac for a few weeks and he was the worst he has ever been, let alone sleeping. Anyone use Zantac and have this problem?
Also, I noticed your a Grandma, if you would like to meet some other grandmas of refluxers, we have a special section just for you guys! My Mom found this site 2 years ago when my son was diagnosed. And here you are, good for you for helping your grandson!
Janette 03-22-2005, 12:47 PM Micky,
Sorry I can't help you with the Zantac question, but I wanted to add that all you have to do to join with the other Grandmothers is to e-mail Roni. Is your daughter registered here?
Becky in NM 03-22-2005, 12:49 PM My son was on Zantac briefly and I don't remember it affecting his sleep.
zapsmom 03-22-2005, 02:50 PM Zoee was on Zantac and yes it affect her sleep. The GI said that yes it can make her restless and not want to sleep when I asked. It can be different with every baby or child. May be you/your daughter can ask the pharmastist.
Good luck.

sixdogssixcats 03-23-2005, 08:49 PM Maybe Catherine is the exception, but she's been on Zantac for a week now and has been sleeping more than 2 hours at a stretch for the first time in her life!
Janette 03-23-2005, 09:04 PM That's so nice to hear, Lesley! I'm sure you're enjoying the break AND the sleep!
zapsmom 03-23-2005, 11:38 PM Zoee is back onthe Zantac now and the pharmactist said that it doesn't cause sleepiness. So now I didn't know. I will let you know when I see how she reacts to it.

I vaguely think I have heard that before in rare cases. Restlessness is usually associated more with Reglan but all kids react differently to things. Remember though, reflux itself will also cause poor sleep habits so it's hard to tell unless you did a trial off the zantac and compared. That may not even be worth it either if he is otherwise doing well on the zantac.
MorganDobes 04-01-2005, 03:51 PM My 5 month old Joseph has been on Zantac for about a month now, and he is getting close to sleeping thru the night. Plus, he takes probably
2 hour naps during the day. This is the most he has ever slept, so I think he is getting a lot of the relief of the Zantac with none of the side effects that you mentioned.
Good luck with your little one,
Lisa
Minnie 04-03-2005, 05:43 PM I agree with Erin, if he is doing well on the zantac I wouldn't think that's what's keeping him up.
Eric still had sleeping problems during the day even while on zantac( not near as bad as unmedicated, but still an issue). You have to remember they are still refluxing. The med just helps with the burn. While I was prego with both kids I had reflux and took zantac. It helped with the pain, but it still happened and I still had that uncomfortable food in my throat feeling, and at night I would still choke on my vomit. It did however cut down on the frequency of my vomiting after I was on it for about 10 days. Then, instead of it happening several times every night. It would only happen ever so often. More like once or twice a week. It also made my episodes less painful, and they were just gross and sometimes scarey if I coudn't breath. It seems to work the same for Eric, and helps cut down on the amount of refluxing and severity.
4babes4us 04-04-2005, 12:01 AM Sara has slept better since she's been on Zantac and Reglan than she ever has in her life. I wouldn't think that would be what's keeping him up if he's otherwise doing fine with it.
amymanny 06-07-2005, 09:05 PM yes, we just took our 7 week-old dd off of it & she's sleeping more again. it got so bad that she was awake every hour at night and for 14 hours straight one day with only two 30 min naps (& a lot of crying). now some of her reflux symptoms are back, but it's not worth her not getting the sleep she needs to develop (& hopefully outgrow the reflux)
luvmyduvi2 06-07-2005, 09:29 PM Trinity is on Zantac 2x's a day since 2 months old. She sleeps really well at night, but not during the day. She basically gets all her sleep at night and we give her second dose about 30-60 min. before she goes to bed. So, with her, I would say maybe during the day. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.
