View Full Version : Dumping Syndrome
ElisMom 03-17-2005, 09:57 PM Roni, I was wondering if you have any info about dumping syndrome. I have been reading on the net about it and am positive Eli is experiencing it. I was just wondering if you know more about it or something I can be doing for him to help him through this that I dont know about.
Hopesfriend 03-18-2005, 12:29 AM From what little I have been told is, food leaves the tummy to quickly and the sugars in the food are absorbed to quickly causing a hypoglysemic effect. Cold sweats, shaking, drop in energy.... How you help it is through diet (are you getting sick of people telling you to change the way Elis eats)But you have to feed him like a diabetic if that is the case. The way to tell if he is doing this is with blood tests I think. I am sorry you all are going through all this. You must be beside yourself with worry.
Sue
Hopesfriend 03-18-2005, 12:30 AM It just dawned on me that I said "the food leaves the tummy to quickly". I'll bet that is going to frustrate the H@##$ out of you if thats the case hu?
Hopesfriend 03-18-2005, 12:35 AM In your other post you said something about having a dialation done? I don't know what that intailed but did symptoms start right about the same time? Sue
Yes, the treatment usually requires diet and lifestyle adjustments. Fiber can help, as can eliminating sweets, eating smaller more frequent meals, avoiding liquids while eating. That's all I can remember right now. Here are some links I have on dumping syndrome though, hopefully they will help some more.

When did you notice this start?
ElisMom 03-18-2005, 11:10 AM Thanks, its already stuff I know but I appreciate it. I was hoping for some great revelation. Um I have noticed it a few times. But, a really bad episode for about an hour last night and he has been unable to eat without retching since. He has all the symptoms of it. As you can guess, I am very disappointed. We have an appointment for next thursday. But, like you guys said we will just have to change the way he eats until it passes which I have read can take up to a year after stomach surgery.
Roni, I noticed before the dialation he had an episode where he went limp and his eyes were rolling around, he was pale and sweaty, complaining of stomach pain. It lasted about an hour. Each time he eats now he yawns and has been doing real good but I think he may just have had a very small version of it. Last night, he had another one, and had been not feeling well with eating all day yesterday. He gets nauseated and tried to vomit and cant. I am very upset. He was doing so good. And, it started again just like the first time a week after surgery and a week after the dialation. I am thinking it may have something to do with tissue in there getting to certain point of healing that the retching feeling gets stronger. Did that makes sense?

Sounds like a pretty good idea, Erin. Have you run it past the surgeon (since it seems like you have a pretty good relationship with him)? I'm so sorry things are going downhill again!
ElisMom 03-18-2005, 02:01 PM I emailed him, I dont know when he will get it because it is friday afternoon. But, he will get it eventually and we are going back on Thursday. This is such a roller coaster!! If he does have dumping, which obviously its like 99.9% he does, it must be mild because it has only happened a few times but the retching is so bad during it that it makes him unable to for I dont know how long, last time they had to dilate him, and that helped until now.
Oh my, it never seems to end huh! ((HUGS)) to you both, he was doing so well, this is just another bump in the road, you'll get it figured out!
ElisMom 03-18-2005, 05:11 PM he emailed me back and said his symptoms have nothing to do with the procedure or reflux and that I can give him mylicon... ?! And, then he went on to say that he will see us thursday for the check and send us back to the GI guy at the childrens hospital.
zapsmom 03-18-2005, 05:32 PM Erin,
Sorry that Eli is having so much problems. ((((HUGS)))) to you and him. Hope he feels better soon. Good Luck on Thursday.
Shannon
He said it's not dumping? If it's not that, then what is it and why would mylicon help?
ElisMom 03-18-2005, 07:04 PM HeHe, Roni, long story. I will update you later on that, Right now, I am leaving to get out of the house for a breather after today. Lets just say for now that my GI is very unhappy and will be seeing Eli next week, it is obviously dumping. I believe it is mild but its there. He has to have lab work on monday and then we will go in sometime next week. UGH, that is where I have been all day, dealing with this! Talk to you all soon. Thanks for the support, it keeps me going!
Janette 03-18-2005, 08:10 PM (((HUGS))) Erin and Eli. I'm sorry to hear that things aren't going well. I'm not too familiar with dumping, but the "episode where he went limp and his eyes were rolling around and he was pale and sweaty" almost sounds like a seizure. Is that possible?
I hope you're having a fun time away from everything!
raisingangels 03-18-2005, 10:10 PM Janette, you kinda have the idea down. When Noah 1st had it I thought for sure it was a strange seizure. It's like this the blood sugars drop and the intestines flush with fluid great amounts of fluid to immediatly cleanse out the body, which is where you get the loose stools from. The fluid for that process to happen is robed from the body very quickly like senconds and it puts the body in a strange state. The dumping can do no harm to the Nissen wrap however, the retching can do a great deal of damage.
ElisMom 03-18-2005, 11:49 PM RaisingAngels I just replied to you on my journal and GERDLing Moms, please respond when you see this if you havent already.... about the yawning, I am so glad you mentioned that Noah does it, I bout fell off the chair when I read that. So, I am not crazy then!! Thanks
raisingangels 03-19-2005, 12:22 AM Erin,
I just replyed for you over at gerdlingmoms. It's gonna all work out I promise !!!
ElisMom 03-28-2005, 09:55 PM Just a little update I forgot to mention on this topic. The GI gave us a lab slip filled out so that if Eli has another episode we will take him straight to emergency and have blood drawn during the episode to see what it does to his sugar levels. It has been what a week and a half so hopefully it wont happen again. But, just in case we have a plan, thanks everyone!
Janette 03-28-2005, 10:07 PM What a relief it must be to know that you can have Eli's blood tested if he has another episode! I hope and pray that it won't be necessary!
YAY! Glad there haven't been any more episodes!
