View Full Version : Constipation on Alimentum?
sixdogssixcats 03-06-2005, 10:31 AM Is this possible???? Catherine has been on Alimentum for three weeks now in part to remedy a 10-day bout of constipation. Since then, she's had 2-3 runny poops per day. However, she hasn't pooped at all in about 30 hours now. Coincidentally, or concurrently, she has also been extremely fussy for almost 24 hours now - eating less than normal and vomiting most of it, cries unless she's being held. Won't sleep for more than a few minutes without being held.
She's soaked my bed linens, I've given up trying to keep her dressed in dry clothes, and I'm about out of clean baby blankets! She's not normally like this. She's usually happy and good-natured. She generally smiles as she's hurling, lol!
ziree 03-06-2005, 10:42 AM ? she was put on alimentum to fix a constipation problem? I am no expert but that doesn't sound like a very good fix. It sounds to me like her little body doesn't like the formula. Mine wouldn't ever take it, she threw up everytime it entered her belly.
Becky in NM 03-06-2005, 10:56 AM We definitely saw a relationship between Daniel's constipation and his lack of eating/vomiting. He was older, so we didn't do all of the formula switching. Instead we relied on a little juice, prunes, and, when he really needed a little help, enulose.
I think anything is possible with these kids. It's not supposed to do that, it's supposed to help b/c it's already so predigested, that's likely why you saw the 2-3 runny BM's before. I don't know why or if it would begin to cause constipation after awhile but who knows. Constipation will definitely make reflux worse. Have you changed anything else that could be attributing to it?
sixdogssixcats 03-06-2005, 11:32 AM Catherine consumes nothing but Alimentum. DS has a history of food allergies (which he has fortunately grown out of) so Catherine gets nothing but formula until she's six months old. Ped reinforced that one the day she was born!
Minnie 03-06-2005, 01:56 PM Humm...?
No change in meds?
Like pps have said constipation and lack of eating and tons of refluxing all go hand in hand. I hope her constipation gets under control soon, and she starts to feel better
Here's wishing you a big healthy baby poop!!!
sixdogssixcats 03-06-2005, 02:29 PM Catherine isn't on any meds.
I'm worn out from the sleep a few minutes-eat a few minutes-vomit-sleep a few minutes cycle we've been going through since yesterday!
She did enjoy a bath. She was starting to stink!
Minnie 03-06-2005, 03:00 PM Lesley,
I hear ya on the few minutes of sleep and few minutes of eating all day. And all the crying...URRGGHHH! By the end of the day both baby and I were zombies. Then he would sleep 5 or 6 hours (yeah, I know I'm lucky ;) That and Eric isn't a puker.) and back at it again. It does get better. Even on our worst days, they are nothing compared to the way it was in beginning. Could be that we just got used to things, but I like to think that YES, It got better! :)
Janette 03-06-2005, 03:34 PM Lesley,
I know how hard it is to go without sleep. We used to get a broken 2-3 hours of sleep per night for weeks at a time, but it will improve. I hope you get that big baby BM real soon, too!
Janette 03-06-2005, 03:35 PM By the way Lesley,
I'm up to an average of 6 hours of sleep per night. It's amazing how the body adjusts when it has to. I actually feel more tired when I get 8 hours in a night (unless I'm sick, of course.)
Gracie's Momma 03-13-2005, 08:48 PM Gracie has been on alimentum since she was a week old and I have noticed that usually for her she has 2-3 bms a day. They are kinda runny or soft and it isn't unusual for her to go an entire day without one. Mostly when that happens she has a nice surprise for Mommy when she wakes up-lol!
zapsmom 03-14-2005, 09:07 AM Sorry Lesley I miss this post till now. Zoee was like that on that formula as well. I know you said that they put her on it for her constipation if I read that right(?) but when Zoee started to have the runny BM"S, herfeeding specialist took her off of it. Say that too many runny BM were not good because it mean that the formula was agreeing with her. HMMM! It is the different Doctor Opinion again. :?
Hope you are getting sleep now!
Shannon
sarahh 03-14-2005, 08:27 PM Hi Lesley...
Not sure what to make of this... we don't have the formula you mentioned here in NZ. What I found with Stephen was that his poop schedule got all mucked up (no pun intended) when we changed formulas- and that was 3 times before w egot him to tolerate one. How is she now- has she pooped??? Is she on a more regular poop schedule??

She has one massive poop daily, usually during the night and it's dh's job to clean her up. :tongue6: It's the least he can do!
