OK, I am sure noone here can help me because I dont know of anyone here who has had the fundo. I posted this question on another site so hopefully when I get a legitimite reason I will let you know. Eli has had the hiccups everyday since the fundo. At first we kind of laughed it off but he is still getting them??? ???? Weird. A reason please? Someone?

Hum....hiccups are a sign of reflux.

As you know, Evan hasn't had the fundo, but he does get the hiccups more often than my healthier child.

Daniel gets the hiccups a lot when his reflux is worse.

maybe I am lucky but Zoee seldomly has the hiccups but when Hobbes was a baby, he had them so much and for a long time. They were horrible.

He never got the hiccups before at all, now he has had them everyday...
Weird.

someone who has had the fundo said that it may because the anatomy of the diaphram has changed or is swollen ?? I guess that makes the most since. So, hopefully they will go away as his body adjusts. He isn't bothered by them, its just odd for me to see.

Ya, that's likely possible....let us know if they continue.

Eli had his first real wretching episode last night. It was totally my fault. He had to big a bite of breadstick.... and he gagged on it which caused him to wretch, which caused him to feel the fundo, which freaked him out and made him wretch more. I am calling the surgeon just to let them know. I hope he didnt mess up anything with the healing process.... Poor baby.

Poor Eli. How's he doing today? Does he remember the weird feeling from last night, or is he eating OK?

He is eating fine Thank Goodness, and his Drs office is closed of course, so I have to wait until tomorrow to talk to anyone. He is a very heavy eater! He loves his food!

Hello,
As you know my son has had 3 fundo's performed and is on his way for his 4th in the next few weeks.
The hiccups you are talking about are completly normal. The air needs to get out some how and beings he can't burp (yet) the hiccups help the air get out. He should be able to pass most of his air out of the other end soon :) They always get a kick out of that ! Some surgeons take the hiccups as an excellent sign that the wrap isn't too tight. So, rest assured he's good They won't hurt the wrap as far as wretching and gagging goes it would take an awful lot of wretching for it to hurt the wrap, but, as long as he doesn;t wretch for longer then a few minutes your good. Every time he wretches he irriatates the wrap and can cause it to swell up a bit so no matter how hard it is stick to the safe foods after each wretching episode until things calm back down a day or two.
Does he have a g-tube also ? They are really useful for venting. Noah didn't get one with hip lap fundo (1st one) when we were 6 weeks out from the 1st we had the g-tube placed for nutrition reasons, but it sounds like Eli is eating great for you.
Fell free to ask any other questions you might have. I have a group locally with 8 children and 16 adults with fundo's so if I'm not sure of something someone in the group always has some insight. It's nice talking to the adults as they can put verbal description to the symptoms.

Hi RaisinAngels,
Thanks for the advice. We will definitely take it easy the next few days. I just tried to feed him pancakes (which he has been eating) and he couldnt eat them so I guess I am back to square one here. And, I will take it slow and easy. I plan on talking to the nurse tomorrow just to let them know. He has been doing really great and I think he just got to big a bite. Hopefully once the swelling goes down he will back to the point he was at. Which was a great point.

Also, if you dont mind me asking, I am just curious after having gone through this once, Why are you going for your fourth? I dont ever want to go through that again! I cant imagine four times! You are brave. Thanks for the advice!

Also, raisinangels, he doesnt have any tubes and never has, and they ended up not doing the pyloroplasty because they found his pyloric sphyncter hadnt seperated from his stomach during development and was kinked and not able to work properly so they repaired that thinking that would take care of the emptying problem. Thanks Again!

Here's a breif little history on why Noah has had 3 Nissen's preformed and will now be having his 4th-

Noah was left undiagnosed with Silent Reflux until he was almost 2 years old. He began vomitting blood and was scoped immediatly @ the ER they found 3 deep bleeding lesions in his esophagus. We always pushed that something was wrong with him but, never got anywhere. Hind sight is 20/20 anyhow. Noah failed meds and was FTT, anemic, ect.

Noah's 1st Nissen was preformed when he was 3 it was June , he did well until one day he started chocking and couldn't stop, off to ER we went and found his wrapped had slipped up into the esophagus bringing the stomach up into the esophagus and twisting thus, getting stuck.

Off to emergency surgery he went - 5 days after the 2nd Nissen was preformed we noticed that his stomach was getting huge ! We asked the nurses & Dr's why they said he was fine we took him home on day 5 - 12 hours later an ambulance was called to our home as Noah stopped breathing, once getting to the hospital we learned that the 2nd surgery had gone terribly wrong, his esophagus had been stitched almost completly shut and the pressure from the tube feeds & complete gastroparisis caused upward pressure on his lungs not letting him breathe. He had normal emptying gastric emptying scans before the surgery. We were told he suffered the parisis in the stomach from the extra mesh piece they had used to help hold his massive hiatal hernie in during the second surgery. That mesh was actually stitched thru the vagal nerve which caused the damage to the stomach. So off to the 3rd 14 hour surgery he went. 57 days later he was realeased from the hospital. It has been almost 2 years since this all happened.
Noah is now 5. He has suffered from a Chronic Cough for that entire 2 years along with too many to count sinus infections. We have had his tonsils removed, adnoids, and several sinus surgeries. We have also tried every antibiotic long and short term to help but nothing. He still does not sleep through the night as he actually reflux's past the wrap he has now. His last PH study showed reflux over 37% of the time. Way too high for a functioning wrap. None of these things have actually convinced us to ever undergo the Nissen again with him.
Noah has been on g tube & j tube feeds, he has also been TPN dependent and supplemented on it too. It has been over a year since he has needed any sup[plementation. He weighs 36 lbs now. He has however failed to ever gain any weight over 32lbs since he was 3 years old. He went in for his 1st Nissen weighing 36lbs. That still isn't why we decied on another surgery.

For over a month now Noah has been collapsing on the floor holding his chest after eating. His heart rate raisies over 160 BPM and he experiences wild pain. After a recent endoscopy we learned that his wrap has 2 major weak spots in it causing the hernia to bulge. The pain is why we have agreed to another NIssen as it may give him 20% or more improvement and he has really held his own for the last 2 years with very little medical assistance and for us now enough is enough. He is to start Kinder. next year and we are hoping for an excellent outcome this time.

Okay so that wasn't so brief :) Sorry ! It's hard to condense, there's tons more but, thats the breif history.

OMGOODNESS!! Wow!! That's awful!!! ((((HUGS)))) Your poor family and most of all poor little Noah!

Do you mind if I post his story on the main site under personal stories?

I remember one time years ago, a mother was explaining how it was her kids brithday party and he spent the entire day in bathroom, he wouldn't come out to enjoy his party and wouldn't tell anyone why. Later that night just before bed, the boy asked his mother if he was going to die. She was horrified and told him no but asked why he would ask such a question. He replied that he just hurt so bad it must mean he was dying.

The poor mother, I can only imagine was heartbroken, he wasn't enjoying his birthday because he feared it would be the last one he saw.

I can't even imagine the pain some of these kids live with.

Oh my gosh! I'm sorry Noah has had to go through all of this! The poor little guy! I sincerely hope that the next surgery is the last one that he has to go through, and that it will fix everything for him! Have you set a date for it?

OMYGOSH!! Wow. I dont even know what to say. I cant imagine how hard that has been on the whole family. I hope you get him fixed up. When does he go in? I will keep you in my prayers.

Sheesh, my worst fear is that Eli will be able to reflux threw his wrap. I cant imagine all that. Just this one surgery has been so hard on us. I can't imagine all of that, on top of the fundos, the others surgeries as well, I gotta give you a hand. :hello1:

Poor Noah and his family! That's so much for a five-year-old to go through. I'm sure you're very concerned about putting him through another procedure, but he can't go on like he is. I just hope this one makes a tremendous difference for him! Please keep us informed of his surgery and progress.

Who is doing this last surgery? Have they been different surgeons each time? Ugh, I really feel for you.

The 1st 3 surgeries were preformed by a Dr. out of UCI (Irvine) This last one will be preformed out of CHOC with a different surgeon. We met the surgeon today and he seems ok. I of course do not care for surgeons all that much so I try to keep my distance. He did interact very well with Noah though which is a plus in my book. We will go back in 2 weeks to have our pre-op visit and get the date for the surgery then. Right now there is a question of whether or not it should be done as a traditional open vs an open chest approach. We of course prefer the 1st option but, he is afraid that there will be too much bleeding in that area as Noah is pretty much mush in that area now from all that has been done. Plus the scar tisuue build up is so very high. The surgeon will review Noahs films from past procedures and meet with his GI Dr. and decide on the best approach before we come back. it will be an anxious 2 weeks for us.
In the mean time I will start getting things ready for the other children. I have a 13 year old whose B-day is coming up, Noah is always in the hospital on my eldest B-day so I want to celebrate it before we go in. I also have a tempermental 9 year old to settle in too along with 17 brownie girl scouts. I also, have a 4 year old little girl who will need some extra attention before we go. She's a little stinker :) Of course last but, not least we have 8 lab puppies who were born on Sunday, they are so cute but, will be quite alot of work. Thank goodness my mom will come and stay here with the other kids. My DH will be around a bit more than normal too, especially if the rain keeps up out here. He's a contractor so when it rains he's home. It sounds crazy around here I know but, we are so used to going with the flow now a days it should all work out just fine.

I can kinda relate, my other children were having lots of issues with the surgery, then for the surgery they had to stay with friends and they have never stayed anywhere before, they were stressed and needing a lot of attention. Then, I have my dogs who I cant leave so had to leave them with Grandpa and 14 hermit crabs that need special care! And, that was just for a few days stay at the hospital, I am sure it is stessful around your house right now! It is so hard on the syblings. Does Noah know he is going to have surgery? I bet at 5, it is really hard, because they know enough to be scared but not enough to be able to justify it very well to themselves. Probably really confused in that little head, and I know my others were very confused and stressed about it.
