View Full Version : How do your older kids explain their reflux pain?
kimber 12-11-2008, 03:26 PM Hi ladies
Zach has been off all meds for some time
I brought him to the allergist because he was complaining his eyes were burning/itchy and his throat hurts occasionally (but he mostly complains about his eyes)
He never ever complains about a tummy ache/burning in his tummy, eats well (not too little not too much)....never wakes at night crying complaining....
He does wake up yawning and tired some days and can never make sense of it
Just wondering how your older kiddies describe their reflux symptoms
Bottom line, we brought Zach to a allergist and he doesn't think Zach's issues are related to food/seasonal allergies but could be reflux (as kids have a hard time explaining their symptoms etc)
I never wanted to hear that ugly word again thought it's been in the back of my mind
Katey 12-11-2008, 03:54 PM Sebastian says that he is feeling 'sicky' or that he can taste breakfast (yuck) or he has sicks, things like that. He does no complain much though. Usually He will be playing and just stop and put his chin to his chest and get really quiet. He will stay that way for a min or so and then go back to playing. If I try to ask what was wrong he will just ignore the whole thing, like it never happend.
Did the Dr suggest trying reflux meds or what? It would really suck if it is reflux, but at least you would know and be able to get him feeling better.
OwensMom 12-11-2008, 04:39 PM That's a tough one, Owen never wants to talk to me about it. He will do the same as Sebastian a lot of the times.
The other day I got him to come out a little and talk to me about it, which really suprised me. He just says that stuff comes up in his throat and that it hurts sometime. And that he has tummy aches sometimes as well. When I asked him why he doesn't tell me about the tummy aches he says it's ok :sad5: , I guess he just kind of got used to it.
Owen has other issues going on then Zach though too, so that is definitly different.
Maybe you can have him show you where it hurts him and to tell you when it happens. It's a tough one, I think a lot of the itmes Owen doesn't want to talk about it because he thinks he will have to go to the doctor again and get poked :angry7:
kimber 12-11-2008, 04:44 PM Thanks ladies
Zach never complains he feels sick, or something is coming up..I never see him 'stop' what he is doing like he is having an reflux episode...makes all this sooooo confusing
For now the allergist wants us to try nasonex every night for 3 weeks and not make any other changes
He said anatomically Zach could be prone to congestion/sinus issues and it may not be triggered by anything (DH has horrible seasonal allergies and congestion and can NEVER breathe through his nose freely)
Thanks for your feedback/insight
Maggie says she's fluxin
she has lines going up in her throat
she's swallowing puke
her tummy hurts
her throat is burning
Do you think it could be sinus drainage irritation? Kaleb's throat hurts and he gets belly aches when his sinuses are acting up.
kimber 12-11-2008, 08:11 PM Thanks Lena
I just don't know :(
Since he ONLY mentions his throat occasionally and mostly his eyes...and never ever mentioned his tummy or getting sick in his mouth...I'm going to use the nasonex (nose spray) for 3 weeks like the allergist rec and take it from there
Thanks again for all your insight
sixdogssixcats 12-11-2008, 08:23 PM Catherine says her stomach and/or throat feel "hot."
AvasMommy 12-11-2008, 09:19 PM Ava doesn't tell me anything. :( And if we ask, she will deny deny deny that ANYTHING is wrong. "I not sicky!" "I not a feeber!" *insert me smiling at the "feeber"...even when she IS sick, I can't help but smile if she says that*
I can just see it with Ava...it's a look in the eyes, like fear, and I can also see it trying to come up...she swallows so hard to keep it down even after the last fundo.
I can relate to your dh, Kim...I've never, ever been able to breathe thru my nose and my allergies are just horrendous. Even though it's a bit better w/o my T and A, I still can't breathe. My nose/back of my throat hurt quite often...I wonder if that's what's going on with him??? But, be forewarned about the Nasonex...it GAVE me a sore throat.
 I really hope you guys can figure out what's going on.
Minnie 12-12-2008, 06:26 AM When Eric admits there's something going on...
Sick came up
I just had (whatever he just ate) sick, and then proceeds to tell me if it tastes good or bad. When it's bad I already know because it makes his eyes water and he usually swallows a lot more and might cough a bit with the sour look on his face
My tummy hot (then he rubs his chest and throat)
He'll be irritable about something (or nothing) and when he cries he'll throw his head back instead of crying like he does normally.
Smell is always a dead give away for me too. You can smell the acid and kinda barfy rotten food smell on his breath.
How does he smell?
kimber 12-12-2008, 07:19 AM Hey ladies
Thanks again...
NO SMELL Minnie...no had back, or swallowing, watery eyes....
Thanks Linds for the head sup about the nasonex...we just started it last night...1 pump each nostril before bed
I know Dr don't believe in intolerances but I think he is reacting to something )his mouth/eyes are affected) and his lower GI...I told the allergist about his gas and he will even leak in his underwear when he is having a really crabby episode
Thanks again..I'll let u know how th enasonex goes
Just so you know, whenever maiya refluxed, she would rub her eyes like crazy. Yes there were environmental allergies too, but she always rubbed her eyes with reflux. If the under part of her eyes were red, then it was more allergies, but if it was just eye rubbing, then it was mostly reflux (but i believe that the allergies made the reflux worse) so it was all related
Sorry- just realized i am being of no help here!
Shaes Grammy 12-21-2008, 03:59 PM I am so surprised that an allergist would even think of reflux? I never knew reflux would have been connected to itchy watery eyes? The sinus, yes.
I've been on nasonex for a long time also....actually it is a generic brand "fluticasone propionate",
I was the same as Lindsay...always a mouth breather. I am doing better now. Finally on a combo of meds that work for me...Qvar (prevent asthma); Singulair; nasal spray and Omeprazole. I also take OTC Claritin.
Again, I think lots of these symptoms are food, etc related and it is just a matter of finding out what the culprit is KWIM?
 I hope the nasal spray does the trick and Zach is alll better very soon. I just can't see that helping with the leaking/gas problem?
Hey, we need to see some pic, of those beautiful kids, in your sig line.
Siobhan 03-18-2009, 04:15 PM my daughter Niamh (4 years) says she has "hiccup owies" (which means reflux pain to her), or that her tummy hurts (and points exactly to her stomach) when she is refluxing. She gets reflux pain when she has to burp to, then she says a "burp is stuck".
Generally the omeprazole helps very well, but occasional bad days (coming down with a cold, or outgrowing dosage) lets the reflux get worse, then she has considerably more frequent hiccups, stomach pain and wet burps (i.e. mouthful would come up again).
Thankfully those days are becoming quite infrequent now, I still think she'll be on meds for the foreseeable future though.
kerrinry 03-23-2009, 01:44 PM Hi Kim! Jack is 4 and he told me it feels like juice coming from his throat :sad3:
Twins plus Two 03-23-2009, 03:34 PM Kitty says "sick in my mouth" and is usually spitting up down her front periodically when it's bad. Archie says his tummy is "poorly inside". He also asks to "do burping", ie vent or drain his stomach when it's bad :( Josh complains of burning in his throat but then he's 11.

Leigh 03-24-2009, 11:22 AM I am on the run right not-must get to IBI.
Walker does not reflux often anymore, but when he does his eyes water and he says they "burn". He rubs them like mad and is able to tell me his throat is on fire when it happens. Curran will sometimes rub his eys, but it seems to be more of a food reaction with him. Iain does not describe anything yet, but when he is flaring, he does rub his eyes, too.
I will have to come back to this. I think Minnie's suggestion of smelling acid breath is a good one. Often, when Iain is 'working on something' we can smell the vomit. Nice.
