My name is Elaine and my husband Eric and I have two beautiful children. Emily is 3 (4 in two weeks) and Luke is 5 months. Luke has reflux, is diagnosed with FTT and we have been battling eating and weight gain issues since he was two weeks old. Luckily, my ped. was on top of things and at 3 weeks old sent us for ultrasound and upper GI to rule out pyloric stenosis. Sometimes I think that diagnosis would have been easier than reflux. He was 9lbs 12.5 oz when he was born and has just this week hit the 14lb mark ( ) We were referred to the most horribly incompetent GI doctor when the test showed reflux. He put him on zantac and them prilosec and did not address the fact that he had gained only 1 oz since birth and at this time he was 5 weeks old. He told us if his symptoms did not improve to call him in a month. Do not listen to them! I switched from that GI doctor and we are now at the children's hospital at U of M. They changed his medicine to prevacid and we saw a small improvement. He stopped crying and started sleeping but he still struggles to eat. He went from 12 oz in 24 hours to 16 and on a good day 20. We had to go for weight checks constantly and the feeding tube issue if he did not increase his volume. He was also extremely gassy, fussy constipated and uncomfortable after we fixed the acid problem. We tried every single formula that you can purchase in the store and some you couldn't. He is now (thanks to the dietcian) on Enfamil Lacto-free. His tummy problems improved immediately. He just can't eat alot. We just spent a week in the hospital after only a 3 oz weight gain in a month. They increased his prevacid from 15mg to 30mg and we saw a drastic improvement in the hospital. He started eating 30-34 oz a day and we post-poned the feeding tube for now. They did the endo scope and found he does not have any damage from the acid. They think that is because he was treated with prilosec at 5 weeks old. He is on a 24 calorie formula and has to gain .5 oz to 1 oz a day. I have to try to feed him every 2-3 hours during the day and twice during the night to get the 34 oz into him. It is a constant struggle to get him to eat. Sometimes he will take 6 oz right down and most of the time it's 2-3 oz at a time. Despite all of this, he is the most good-natured baby. He smiles all the time and is really coming along developementally even if his weight is not. I hope my story was not to boring. I hope by joining this group I can learn everything I can. Thanks for reading.

Hi Elaine and welcome!

I'm glad that you've found us and that you were able to get a diagnosis while Luke was so young!

Hi!!

I'm a mom of a 5 month old too! She's on Prevacid also! I wanted them to increase the dosage, she's on 7.5mg and not doing well at all, but no ped. would do it. I have seen 5 ped. so far,and my next step is to go to a children hospital in Halifax, I.W.K.. I'm going to see yet another ped. monday, and I would very much like to give your ped.'s name (the one that increase the dosage) and also the location if you don't mind, this would hopefully help me very much! I hope we can help each other through this. Any thing I can help with, let me know! Good luck

Chantal (Lizabelle 5 month)
