Has anyone heard of Acidophilus to treat acid reflux? My husband mentioned to his chirpractor that our son has GERD and was on medicine for it. The chiro said he doesn't believe in pharmicuticals (they usually don't) and he recommended breaking open acidophilus capsules and putting some in my son's food. First he recommended yogurt, but he is on a no-dairy diet so that is out.
A side note--my son was on Zantac and it did seem to help some, but the nurse practioner didn't think it was working fast enough so she switched him to Prevacid. He immediately started with diareaha and within 5 days he then had an allergic reaction. Itchy nasty hives on his face and neck that kept him awake at night. The NP said we were lucky because with allergic reactions to meds there is usually breathing problems involved. He is now back on Zantac and I am praying it does the trick.

Acidophilus is a probiotic. It helps to promote healthy bacteria in the digestive system. We tried it with Shae for a time but didn't notice any difference so stopped. There is a certain strain (lactobacillus I think, can't quite remember so be sure to check) that shouldn't be given to children under 1 year but sometimes you can buy an infant one that is free of the lactobacillus.

Check out this site for more info on probiotics: http://www.usprobiotics.org/

Our infant has both reflux and recently had ear tubes inserted after several double ear infections. The multiple doses of antibiotics upset her GI tract. We've had good luck with adding acidophilus to two bottles each day. It hasn't helped with the reflux buth the Ped GI says that it couldn't hurt her. The rest of the family takes acidophilus as well. It helps with overall immunity, as much of our immunity comes from the stomach.
