View Full Version : neverending constipaion
zapsmom 10-02-2004, 12:27 PM Hi everyone,
I know that this topic has been discuss before but I tink I have tryjust able every thing that was suggested. Zoee is so constipated that I didn't know what to do for her any more. She doesn't go for a couple of days, then she does have small hard poops and maybe soft ones that just sit between her little butty cheecks and then she will have diahrawhich starts the cycle again. with all the all day sraining it is causing her to throwup more when she is strianing and she cries all day from all of this. I have talk to her feeding specialist about this and she has said to give Colace every day. I am doing this, just able 1ml in her bottle and nothing. I have try some prune juice. Waiting to see if that will work or not.
I didn't know what do anymore. I was told by the feeding specialist not to let her get this constipated or to strain that mush to make her reflux worse.
The question is........ What else can I do for her?
I am so tire of seeing her struggle with her poops. We were up at 4:30 this morning with her struggling to poop till a little after 7 am.
Help! :?:
Phyllis 10-02-2004, 03:44 PM Hello, I have the same problem with my 8 month old. His GI doc told me to give him "Maltsupex" (malt soup extract). I buy it on the internet, it comes in syrup or powder form (powder is easier to use) and just add 1 tbsp per day to a bottle of formula. It works really nicely. The other thing I have to do is give him some kind of fruit or veggie every day. The doc suggested squash and green beans for the fiber.
The maltsupex is expensive but its worthwhile since its working for our boy. Its about $50 for an 8 oz jar but you only use 1 tbsp per day so it lasts a while.
Once my son turns 1, we can switch to Karo corn syrup but under 1 is too young. There is a slight risk of botulism when you give it to an infant that young.
Hope this helps!
zapsmom 10-05-2004, 11:02 PM Hi Phyllis,
Thank you for the suggestion. Also sorry I never got back to you sooner. I was talk to my husband about "Maltsupex". He is not too sure of it. Can you send me the website so we can research the Maltsupex? I have to try something, she is getting worse. With all the sups, prunes and pears with Colace on top of all this, you would think she could go . The poor baby.

Phyllis 10-06-2004, 04:53 AM Hugs to you and your baby! Poor little thing! I get Maltsupex at www.drugstore.com. They have 16 ounce jars of it but I dont think they sell the 8 ounce jars. Its expensive so you may want to try the 8 ounce jar before you go for the larger size. You should shop around too, you can get the 8 ounce jar for around $55, but I've seen it go for as much as $80. The powder is easier to use because the syrup is as thick as honey. Although its expensive, it does last a long time since you only use one tablespoon a day. You can read the details about it at drugstore.com, just do a search on their website for "Maltsupex". My son's GI doc likes it because its safe for long-term use and its a natural thing rather than a medicine. And once he's a little older, we'll try the corn syrup.
The GI doc also told me to use a little bit of Anusol once a day. This healed his fissures and hemmoroids quickly and made him less fearful of the pain that he had when making a movement. Also, that if he still gets occasional constipation to get the baby-sized glycerin suppositories. And dont insert it all the way, just rub it in and out a couple of times. I did this for the first 2 days on Maltsupex and it worked nicely. After that, he didnt need the extra help.
feel free to write back if you want more info

Phyllis 10-07-2004, 07:29 AM Hello again! Dont be worried about not knowing about hemorroids! I didnt either till the GI doc told me. They are kind of like varicose veins around the anus, caused by straining too hard. I really didnt get to see them, they pop out a bit when he strains so the only time i really saw them was when i was using the glycerin suppository. Then his anus swelled up. What I did see all the time though was "anal fissures", thats like splits in the skin around his anus, he was very sore there from the big hard movements that he had. Anusol helps both hemorroids and fissures. It numbs the whole area and it also reduces swelling of inflamed tissues. It really helped our little guy alot - he was afraid to poop due to the pain until we started using it and then you could almost see him go "AAHHH! Feels nice!" Anyway, you can get Anusol at any drug store, its over the counter in the area where they sell laxatives. It comes in a tube like toothpaste, around $5 or so.
Hope this helps your little one too!

I wanted to say that Malt Supex is a wonderful idea. I used this with my 3 older girls and it works gret. However you do not have to order it on-line for such crazy amounts. Malt Supex is just boiled Malt Barley, you can find it at Whole-Foods or really any health food store. Ask fro Malt Barley, it will be in the sweetner isle. It is a godsend, also something worth trying is Flax oil. Just as our mothers used Cod-Liver oil, not good for young children, this will help lubricate and also has lots of omega-3, can't beat that. Also, for my son who has constant constipation, I give him 5 oz a day of Organic prune juice. Not the baby kind, regular juice. The organic has much more prune stew in it and it is not warted down. Good luck. I have found that more water also helps along with these things.

Is the organic strength safe for infants.
Ablondeheart 01-12-2005, 02:24 PM Yes the strength for Malt Supex is the same. It is actually the same thing exactly, boiled malt barley.
As far as Organic Prune juice, I add a little water becasue it is thicker. But it is very safe. Better that the Gerber or such. No additaves or anything
Good luck.

mweinbaum 11-09-2006, 01:38 PM Hi,
Unfortunately, they do not make maltsupex anymore-if I buy malt barley and boil it, how much do I put in the bottle? How much maltsupex did you put in the bottles for your girls?
thanks
Marni
