Hi eveyone. What a relief to find people who can relate. I'm not a big chat room person but I thought I might be able to provide some helpful input.
I have 2 daughters (Angelina 28 months and Gianna who is almost 8 weeks old). With my 1st - Angelina I didn't know what was going on. All I knew was it didn't seem right that feeding her should put her in such distress.
My ped suspected reflux (even though she didn't spit up) and we ended up on the Alimentum w/cereal; Zantac 3x day. We also used the Dr. Brown bottles. From what I remember Angelina seemed to get under control pretty quick (but it might be like giving birth - you forget the pain over time).
Gianna started having the same symptoms(crying while feeding, very painful gas with pulling her legs, hard to burp, and generally in distress most of her waking time). I started the Dr. Brown bottles again - which didn't make much difference and we starting switched from Enfamil to Enfamil AR which seemed to make her extremely gasy. He also started her on Prilosec 1xday but it seemed to be wearing off by the next dose so we uped it to 2xday. Next, we switched to Alimentum and he told us to add the cereal to thicken it (1 1/2 - 2 tsp per oz). Rice made her constipated; Barley made her gasy so now we are using Oatmeal ( Beechnut brand because it doesn't contain soy which he says is constipating). Adding the cereal seemed to make her spit up which she was doing much of even with the reflux. So I tried to reduce the amount to 4 tsp for 4 oz which helped the spit up but I did notice some reflux incidents and had a few scares where she would start choking with spit coming out of her mouth.
Gianna was still having problems last visit and he scheduled a stool sample to test for blood (negative) and we just had an upper GI and they confirmed her reflux.
I just switched her to the Nutremigen the other day and increased the cereal again to 2tsp per oz. and she seems to be doing a little better (less gas, not as much crying, no spit ups or choking). I'm not sure if it is the formula switch or the fact that she is getting bigger and possibly able to digest the cereal better.
I'm a contract consultant and was planning on returning to my client in Nov. and have been stressed about leaving her with someone else as well. I'm hoping her progress continues. My neighbor who is interested in watching her had a son (now 13) with reflux which sounds much worse than Gianna's which makes me feel a little more confortable since she has been through it. I also found a center where they have experience with reflux (twins). So at least I have some options since we really need the $$ because I don't get paid maternity leave.
My daughter Angelina outgrew her reflux at 9 months and is totally fine which gives me hope that there is a light to the end of the tunnel.
