My 2nd daughter was born July 2nd and weighed only 6lbs. 2oz. She was a little early, but I also had Gestational Diabetes...Dependant on Insulin and was Insulin Resistant.
They said she was not a typical Diebetic baby. No breathing problems, Lower weight, etc.

From the time she was born, she would choke a little, but didnt throw up. I think she was swallowing it. The Doctors kept telling us it was just excess fluid due to having a C-Section.
Around 2 weeks we noticed that she was still choking and would have a hard time catching her breath. This would be Horrible during the night. She would only sleep in our arms and would cry 1/2 of the night. We just thought she was a fussy baby because our 1st was SO good!
I called the Doctor because she wanted to eat constantly. She would just finish a bottle and she would scream, arch her back and try to climb up your neck! We would give her another couple of sips and she would eventually fall asleep. For about 15 minutes when she would wake up screaming.
She also never was a regular pooper. Only pooped every 2 days or so. (has anyone had this happen? Is it part of the Reflux)

Finally at 4 weeks at 5am I fed her about 2 oz. and she fell asleep. All of a sudden she started Throwing up violently and it kept coming for hours on end. We called the Dr. And we brought her in where she was diagnosed with GERD.

They started her on Zantac 3x a day. It worked for about a week and the meds wouldn't last until the next dose time.
They than switched her to Prevacid once a day. That helped for a little while.
She ended up getting worse again about 2 weeks after that. We went in and they said to try switching her to the Enfamil A.R. and that should help since she was Maxed out on the Prevacid.
The Enfamil A.R. worked for a couple of weeks, but she had gotten really constipated. We tried 3 oz of prune juice a day in the morning and 1 tbls in each bottle.....Didn't help at all. I took her in Tuesday because she hasn't stopped Screaming in 2 days straight (besides nightime)
She has her Reflux acting up, but also had a Bowel Obstruction due to the A.R. formula. They now have switched her to the Enfamil Nutrimigen (the really expensive stuff). They think she might also have a milk allergy which is making her Reflux worse Her constipation is now gone, but I don't think it has helped her reflux. I actually think it has gotten worse.

I have finally made an appt. for her at a pediatric Gastroenterologist. I am hoping that maybe they will have some more answers on what to do. Her pediatrician is basically on the last resort with the Prevacid and the new Formula.

Do all of you see specialists? Is there any specific answers that I should ask? She hasn't been a HUGE puker.....Just a little spit up because she always seems to try to reswallow it. Is this normal? She will soon be 11 weeks old and I want to try to put her in her crib, but I am worried she will choke and can't catch her breathe like she sometimes does???? When can I safely put her in her crib and is it going to get worse because her bed now is elevated and we can't elevate her crib?

SORRY this is SO long, but I have SO many questions on what tests they are going to do or what else they can do for her? I feel like we are at the end of the line in regards to helping her with the pain.

She is really advanced otherwise which is wierd. She started rolling over this week and is rolling everywhere. She also scoots across the floor on her back. She lifts her butt up and keeps kicking off with her legs. She hollds her head up and has since she was born, She babbles, smiles and laughs (when she isn't in pain).

Hi there and welcome!
My son, Evan, is nearly 2 1/2 yo. He hasn't seen any specialists (except for his dietician and a feeding therapist for a while) for his reflux, but is beginning to see some for his global developmental delays. He was a spitter upper at first before becoming a vomiter.

I wouldn't put your dd in the crib until you feel comfortable that she will be fine and safe. To elevate the crib when you're ready, try putting a 2x6 under the legs at the head of the crib.

usuallyHi Mackjad
My daughter wasn't much of a throw-up either. She was doing the choking since birth as well. She too, was a section baby. I was to told that it was the fliud as well as my milk flow was too strong for her. She in the long run of things ended up choking 6 to 10x a feed where she would turn purple. We were told that it was reflux with feeding problems as well as her wind pipe collaspes when she is sucking.

I have tried the nutramigen for my daughter. It didn't work for her. It made her throwup worse. Her feeding specialist now wants us to try the enfamil AR.

My daughter is also very constipated. I have been up with her since 5am this morning with her trying to go for a poop. We are trying colace. It does work a lillte for her.
We see a lot of specialist.....feeding specialist, Gi, breathing, Gentics, Ot, and Phyiso for her. Because of her weight(She is 16wks and weight 17lbs8oz.), she is having some developement delays.
As for the bed, we were able to get her a wedge for under her crib mattress with a sling that keeps her in place from the OT. I ,too, am scared to let her sleep in her crib aswell so I sleep sitting up with her. Do what you feel is safe.

Sorry that this is long. I understand all the questions. i usually ask alot too.

Hi -

Well, it sounds like we have the same baby! Abigail took her first trip to the ER the day after we brought her home from the hospital because she choked and stopped breathing for about 15 sec., turned purple, etc. She was dx'd when she was about 3 weeks old; she would literally choke everytime she fed (several times).

She has been on liquid prilosec since 4 weeks old, she's now 4-1/2 months.

We haven't been able to burp her, b/c when we do - she throws most of it up. She is a bit lactose intolerant (fussy/gassy), but we earned our last trip to the ER a month ago when we tried switching her to Soy formula (supposedly made for gassy/fussy babies) ... well, 3 hours after we fed her the Soy-based formula, she threw up / dry-heaved for 1/2 hour straight.

The best formula that we found that works is Good Start. We have had to put baby rice cereal in it since she was about 6 weeks old to thicken it up, (which we found helps with her not throwing up *as much*), but makes her extremely constipated! The trick to the constpation that I found works is 3 oz. of natural carrot juice 1x a day. Her Pediatrician wasn't too pleased beacuse of the sugar content (although it's all-natural/organic), and has advised us not to do that.

Her choking has almost completely subsided, but she now vomits as long as 4 hours after her last feeding.

The only doctor we have her seeing (for now) is her pediatrician.

I completely sympathize with you, and hope you find the answers you're looking for!

Welcome to the boards!

If she is still throwing up after several hours of feeding then I would suggest trying to get her on a motility agent (http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/treatments.htm), as well, there are several other more elemental formulas that may help more than the nutramigen (unfortunately, they can get even more expensive).

As for the crib elevation, see this post (http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=167) about how to safely prop her without spending a fortune on wedges and slings.

What about trying colace for the constipation?
