View Full Version : here is my story....
zapsmom 09-11-2004, 03:49 PM Hi, my story is about my daughter Zoee. Sorry it is a long one. Zoee was born on May 25, 2004. She weight 7lbs and 12oz. Right away, she had problems feeding. she would choke when she fed. She was breast feed at that time. She would turn purple from choking. To make things shorter.... Zoee continue to choke with feeds and vomitting would start. I told the doctor about the vomitting but at the time she was vomitting down her chin. The doctor was not concern so I never ask about the choking. I was asking around ...The advise was it was my milk flow was too strong and fast for her. I start to try her on a bottle at5 weeks as will as breast feed. The choking started to get worse. Zoee was now having more problems with latching which she had started at 2weeks old. The choking was up to 5 or more times a day. The more she choked she would start to vomit in large amounts where she would cover me and herself. by the time she was 8weeks, she was choking 10x a feed Breast or bottle and was starting to not feed. She would just give up. She would be latching on(breast) and not nursing. I finally took her to the hospital where they said reflux which my public health nurse had said. they put her on two meds Randitine and metoclpramide and thichened her feeds, told me to go to her doctor right away. We did that and Zoee has been in and out of the hospital since she was 8 weeks old. She is now 15 weeks. She is still gaging, choking, vomitting. We are working with many specialists.....Feeding , nuerologist, breathing, GI, child development, OT
Now here is what we are being told.....
1. She has reflux but the test show show no reflux not the swallow or the ph probe should no acid.
2. She is gaining to much weight .....She weights about 10 oz in fours days.
3.She was losing her head control so the y stop the met. They say that there are some developement delays.
4. her windpipe collaspes when she feeds.
We are looking for many answers. Oh... She is now so fussy, all she does is cry all day till the evening around 9:30 pm then she sleeps till 3:30am. that is a blessing for us and her, I think.
Can anyone help us?
Sorry this is so long.

Janette 09-11-2004, 08:54 PM Hi there and welcome!
I know from personal experience how difficult it is to deal with a young child's reflux every day and night. My son, Evan, is nearly 2 1/2 years old. He has had reflux since birth, but wasn't properly diagnosed until he was 1 1/2 years old. He also has many developmental delays (ie, he didn't crawl until 22 months, he's just starting to walk, and he can't feed himself yet) and many specialists as well.
Re: the tests, if it was the upper GI that you had done, it will only show reflux if the child refluxes during the test.
I'm glad that you were able to get help through the ER; that's what we eventually had to do too. Since Zoee is not improving on her meds. (if I understood correctly), I would suggest having the doctor try her on something else. It's really a trial and error method to find the right med. or combo. of meds. that work, as each child is different. I've never heard of the meds. that you mentioned, so I'm curious as to where you are from.
Are you and your husband able to get someone is at least once in a while to relieve you?
Welcome to the boards! I ditto everything Janette said. If there is no improvement with the meds she is currently on then they need to start treating her more aggressively.
Janette ranitidine is just the generic name for Zantac, and metoclopromide is the generic name for Reglan.

If that's the case, then the fact that they are the generic brand could also be the problem, as generic brands don't work as well for some people as the "real" brand. There's a slight difference in the processing.
zapsmom 09-12-2004, 04:46 PM Hi Janette and Roni,
Thank-you for the reply. Janette, I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba. As for the meds, they have stopped her from theone med (Not the Zantic but the long name one) because she was losing her head control. I asked if they were going to start a different one and they felt that it would not happen. They believe that the Zantic is helping . We are seeing the top feeding specialist here in Wpg. She is the greastest. She is getting us to try Zoee on a formula for colic.......there is a chance that she may be colicly as well as have the reflux with the collasping windpipe.
the question then is........ Is reflux and colic not the same thing to some people?
Janette, You asked if there was anyone to help my husband and myself.....No we have no one. We have a 2 year as well who had reflux as well when he was a baby but it went away before he was even 6 months old. My in laws believe that my son was worse than Zoee is and didn't even come to the hospital to see her. They didn't believe there is a problem because she weights so much. The thichened feeds have her weighting 18lbs at 3 1/2 months.
Sorry i have gotten long winded again. It is relief that there are people who do understand that reflux can be serious.
one more question for anyone.....
Did any one's baby have the problem with swallowing? Zoee has the problem swallowing thin liquid as well the thichened. We have to even thicken her meds.

Janette 09-12-2004, 08:22 PM Hi Shannon! I'm your neighbour over in Ontario.
The Reglan that you mentioned often does have side effects, so it's good you noticed that she was losing her head control and had her taken off of that med.
Colic and reflux are not the same thing, but reflux is often misdiagnosed as colic in infants.
It sounds like your in-laws don't live too far away. Could your husband get them to come relieve you at least once a month, if not once a week?
My son didn't have any problems with swallowing, but he wasn't able to suck very strongly or very well for a long time.
