View Full Version : Possible relapse?
momgoincrazy 05-25-2004, 07:25 AM Branden has been doing so well for about the last 6 weeks or so, been off the meds now for about a month, wilh little reflux symptoms at all. The last few days however have me worried that we may be going back to where we were not that long ago. The arching and difficulty in feeding is back, as is the fussiness and the spitting up/vomiting. It scares me to think that the doc may have been a little premature in taking him off the domperidone and that Branden may now be on his way back to the suffering he went through for the first 15 weeks of his life...There hasn't been any real change in his diet, other than he is eating a little more cereal and drinking more diluted juice lately. Looks like another trip back to the ped. I really thought that maybe he would kick this thing sooner than later :( I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens at his next appt....Some good news though, Branden's been sleeping through the night now for exactly a week! Seems like it took forever since my daughter was sleeping through at 3 weeks...Hope everyone's doing well. Thanks again for listening...
Janette 05-25-2004, 08:40 AM I'm glad to hear that Branden is sleeping through the night. I'm sure it's nice for you to get a little more sleep again. Sorry to hear about the reflux, though. It's such an awful roller coaster for these poor young children!
Thanks for sharing the update about the meds. We're seeing the ped. this afternoon, and I WAS going to ask him what he thinks about taking Evan off of his meds., but now I'm just not so sure.
momgoincrazy 05-28-2004, 08:48 AM Hey all,
I called the ped. the other day to try to get some more meds for Branden but of course, it was Wednesday which means the office was closed. I was so upset because Branden was really suffering with the reflux again so I called the pharmacy to see if there was anything I could give him "over the counter". I pretty much knew the answer but gave it a shot anyway. The kind pharmacist did look back on Branden's records and saw that he did in fact fill a presciption for the domperidone a few months back. He told me to come on in and pick up a refill and get him a presciption the next day when the ped. office was open. What a relief! I thanked him profusely and came home and started Bran back on the domperidone. Within the first 12 hours, he was back to his happy self! No more arching or fighting while feeding, and much less spitting up/puking already! I couldn't believe it because the first time he took it, it took about 2 weeks before I saw any real results. I am so glad the pharmacist was so kind, especially since we can't get into the ped. until next week and Bran's being christened on Sunday. I thought for sure it was gonna be an awful day if I didn't find some way to get Bran feelin better again. Hopefully now, it will be a great day and Bran will keep smilin :D I plan on asking the ped to do some more tests on Bran to see what we might expect in the future, although I know so much of this is so unpredictable. Will keep u posted....
Janette 05-28-2004, 09:30 AM I'm glad to hear the domperidone worked so quickly this time (and that you have such an amazing pharmacist! Not many would go that far out of their way!) I wonder if Branden still had a build up of mes. in his body that it worked so quickly this time, or maybe it's just because his body is used to the med. now.
Funny...I often shorten Brandon's name to Bran, too.
momgoincrazy 06-01-2004, 02:05 PM Hi all,
Branden had an appt. with the ped. today and we finally got an actual "reflux" diagnosis, based on the fact that the domperidone worked so well and so quickly this time. He advised against any further testing for now seeing as the meds seem to be doing the job for now, if it wasn't reflux he explained, the domperidone wouldn't be helping. He said that he would only recommend further testing if it gets any worse. We now have a presciption to last for 5 weeks and at that time, I'm to take him off of it and see what happend. He also advised to give Bran cereal 3 times a day instead of just at morn and at night AND he even suggested putting a little in his bottle...I've tried that one before and always get clogged nipples so I stopped. I read a post earlier that mentioned how it's so odd that Canadian docs never seem to recommend the cereal in a bottle thing whereas the american one's do. I thought so too until today when my ped suggested it, I almost fell over :D Anyways, I'm gonna do the cereal 3 times a day but give him a little less than usual so he doesn't get too chunky  He's already at 18.5 lbs as of this morn! The doc agrees that weight is not an issue here (obviously). Oh, and he also has thrush again for the 3rd time...I just stopped sterilizing his nipples a few weeks ago, looks like I'll have to get back to it again. Does anyone else have this same issue?
Janette 06-01-2004, 02:44 PM I can't believe that doctor is taking Branden off of the domperidone so soon, especially since it's obviously helping him to feel better and to be healthier.
About the cereal clogging the bottle's nipple, try sterilizing a needle and then using the needle to enlarge the hole a bit, but not so much that Branden gets too much and chokes. I actually heard of another Canadian mom of a refluxer who just got told to add cereal to the bottle, too...
momgoincrazy 06-01-2004, 02:48 PM I was kind of disheartened as well to know that he had only given me another 3 week supply on top of the 2 weeks one I got from the pharmacist last week but he also mentioned he doesn't want to over-medicate him for no reason either. He did mention that when I run out of meds, if he has any further problems, he wants to see him again and we'll go from there...we'll see what happend I guess. Keep your fingers crossed... :D
Janette 06-01-2004, 02:53 PM Is there any way you can get a second opinion, Stacy? I'd really hate to see Branden get so sick again so soon, especially since the doctor has now confirmed reflux!
momgoincrazy 06-01-2004, 03:06 PM I'm positive my hubby will ask the same thing about a second opinion when he gets up...its something I may do, only problem is where we live, its almost impossible to get an actual ped for your kids ever since my older 2's ped committed suicide last year and another retired. Bran's ped is the only one left....I could try to go out of town but a lot of them will only accept if there's no family doc avail, which we have. My family doc couldn't figure it out and thats the only way we even ended up seeing a ped at all. It's all so frustrating! If I don't end up getting a second opinion and Bran finishes this last dose of the domperidone and relapses again, I will DEMAND something else be done immediately. I will not see him suffer ever again like he did in the beginning...
Hey Stacy, how's Brandon now? Reflux does tend to peak at around six months or so, hopefully what you are seeing is the beginning of the end of it for Brandon (just a little positive thinking for you to start the day with  ).
momgoincrazy 06-07-2004, 08:01 AM Hey Roni, welcome back :D Bran is doing better the last 2 weeks or so, once I got him back on the domperidone, it's been great since. He's been spitting up a lot less and hardly ever fights and arches during feeding anymore (as long as we don't miss a dose that is). Seems as tho if we do miss a dose by mistake or give it to him too late, his symptoms come back almost immediately. I'm just so thankful the meds worked so quickly this time, when I first gave them to him, it took about a week and a half to notice any real changes. Being that he's almost 5 and a half months old, I hope your right about the possibility that this may be the beginning of the end for him. He's such an amazingly happy and relaxed boy when the meds are doing their job. I just wanna mention again that if it weren't for this site, I have no doubt that I would still be fighting with the ped about what exactly was wrong with Bran. It took me bringing in the info I found on this site into the ped office for him to even consider that reflux was the problem. He was finally just officially diagnosed last week, nearly 5 months into this. I am ever so grateful for you and this site and everyone's support. I realize now what a lifesaver everyone's been to me through the rough times and I hope I can take what I've learned and help others. Thanks again and good to have you back! :D
 Aw shucks, I'm so happy the site helped you! That's why it's here!! Taking the info you found here to the ped was a great idea, I think anyone who is having trouble getting their doctor to listen should try this approach.
Glad the meds are doing what they are supposed to!!
