How do your children sleep? My son is 7 wks old and we have a 30 degree angle reflux wedge where he's velcroed onto it on his tummy. He sleeps on it sometimes, but we don't like leaving him unsupervised b/c sometimes he turns his head face down and doesn't move it  We're afraid he'll suffocate, so we take shifts at night. However, he sleeps on our chests just as much. I know this creates a whole other set of issues for later on, but we can't let him sleep in his bouncey seat or car seat b/c he refluxes-it goes up his nose, he can't breathe, it freaks us out, and it's just a nightmare. Just wondering how other parents do it. Thanks!

Hi Amy,
There is an increased risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or crib death) if babies are left sleeping on their tummies. We chose, therefore, to put both of our boys on their backs to sleep. Because of his reflux, Evan was never comfortable lying on his belly anyway, even when he was awake. Brandon would just fall asleep in his crib. Again because of his discomfort with the reflux, Evan always needed to be rocked to sleep for naps and at bedtime. Only now, at the age of 26 months, is he starting to fall asleep in his own bed sometimes.
We never used a wedge with Shae...we used pillows under her mattress and towels around her to keep her from moving. Place a number of pillows under the mattress to prop it up as much as you can. I always used two pillows and doubled them up by folding them in half. Then use towels rolled up to hold him in place. Take three very thick and large bath towels and roll them up nice and tight. Put one on each side of where the baby will lay leaving just enough room for the baby to fit in between nice and snug. Then put the rolled up towel underneath, across the other way to hold up his bum. You now have a U shape made with towels. Take a crib sheet and place it nice and snug over the towels and tuck it under either side of the crib to hold the towels in place. You've made a nice little nest for baby and they can't go anywhere. Shae slept like this until she was over a year, it was around that time that she started sleeping with us...but that's another story.
