Hi, my 9-month-old's been diagnosed with silent GERD 18% of time (there's a section on him in Fundo issues). He hasn't vomitted since Zantac and later Prilosec, except sometimes when he's taking medicine. I think being stressed out and screaming about taking medicine can cause reflux and thus vomit (sometimes whole meal). Correct me if I'm wrong please.
Now my big question is that he's been crying high-patch sounds as in pain about 1.5 hours after the last meal before bedtime. We need to hold him for a while for him to calm down. The soy formula is usually above 100cc (which is considered a lot for him), and then he'd been held upright for at least 20 min. Is it normal to wake up crying 1-2 hours after eating because of reflux or something else? He got himself so upset and vomited milk - from a mouthful to a complete feeding. This had happened in the past 4 days consecutively around same time. We also noticed his dry coughes increased a bit during the day - a sign of reflux. That's why we suspect the crying is reflux-related. What do you think?
Sometimes we don't made up all the amount of Prilosec (3cc/day) that he splits...can that cause the reflux to be worsen that day? It can be quite hard to estimate how much to make up and I don't want him to be overdose.
thanks for any input!
Yes, crying a lot (for whatever resason) will definitely make him reflux and puke...this still happens to Shae. Some people even say laughing too hard will make their refluxers sick...isn't that sad  , when a kid can't even laugh? Is there any way that you can make taking medicine a little easier on him? Is it mixed with anything like Chocobase to help the taste? Can you put it in his cereal? Just some thoughts, if med time is one of the things that will make him sick.
If he is vomiting milk 1-2 hours after a feeding it would seem to be an emptying problem, although you said the scan was fine? Have you changed anything in his diet or daily routine? I guess in answer to your question, yes, it could be getting worse, but that doesn't mean it will stay like that. This is just what tends to happen with reflux...thus, the name reflux 'roller coaster' b/c of the highs and lows in their reflux episodes. It will probably get better in a few days to a week about as fast as it started and you will likely never know why. We also still go through this with Shae-Lynne.
You are probably right to not repeat the med when it's puked up but you are also right that by not getting the right amount of the med his reflux is likely a bit worse.
Sorry there's no easy answer.

Thanks Roni. Scan showed no delayed emptying problem. No drastic change in diet. All the solids he ate he tried before. Mmm...I wonder why his reflux could be getting worse.
Another question - I'd like to know how prilosec should be taken. Our doc just prescribed 3cc/day without specifying when. I heard it's more effective to take it in empty stomach. What do you think? Also is it really necessary to take the whole dosage all one time? If I put it in milk and he doesn't finish the milk, we can just keep diluting that milk and give him thoughout the day. Is that bad? He doesn't take the milk well when we added prilosec. I think the medicine taste still bothers him. We're trying a new pharmacy that can add extra flavor. Hopefully that helps. If not, we'll try Chocobase. I guess Chocobase works well with Shae?
He doesn't eat enough solids for me to put Prilosec in cereal or other solids. As you know our biggest goal is to gain weight fast to avoid fundo/g-tube. Milk seems to help with gain weight easier than solids...what do you think? We do let him try some solids everyday but he only takes very little (partly because he's kind of full from milk or just plain food aversion). If for any reason he wouldn't take milk while sleeping, I'm afraid he won't take solids either as there's not enough practices. What a hard balance to keep!
Thanks again Roni. I think of you and Shae a lot.

Hi Shelley. Evan takes 10 mg of Losec (the Canadian name) every morning in bite of applesauce. We were told that it should be given 20 to 30 minutes before he eats, along with his Domperidone. I would personally try not to dilute it in milk, because that could take quite a while to finish, and some of the milk (and, therefore, some of the med.) is always left in the bottom of the bottle. Hope this helps.

Trent is not on Prilosec (he is on Prevacid), but He also takes Periactin which tastes pretty bad. He has been on Pediasure since he was 9 months old, and it has really put weight on him well. I feed Trent while his sleeping. He still will not drink a bottle awake. I use a pacifier medicator, and mix a little of the pediasure (about 3 cc) with the Periactin and put it in the pacifier medicator. After he goes to sleep, I put that in his mouth first, he sucks it right down, and then I take it out and put his bottle in. I haven't had any problems with it so far because the pacifier medicator is just like a bottle nipple. I don't know if this will help for your little one, but that is what I do for mine.
