We're still trying to figure out if our son has reflux, but wanted to know when drs will put babies on ppi's (i.e. prevacid)?

Trent was started on Prevacid at 12 weeks, but I have known babies that were started earlier than that. The only thing is, unless you use some sort of suspension for it, like chocobase (www.chocobase.com) it is hard to administer to a baby not eating solid foods. I have to sprinkle it in Trent's food and spoon feed it to him. I used to try to mix it with water and put it in a syringe, but the time release beads in it are too large and clog the syringe up. If your son does get put on it, ask for the largest syringe the pharmacy has!

Meghan was on Prilosec at 2 1/2 months. I'm not aware of any restrictions with age on ppi's. I second the oral suspension to administer it, plus you can have it flavored:)

My little grand daughter was diagnose with reflux at about 3 days of age, spent time in NICU..now is 6 weeks only weigs 6 pounds. Eats only 1 oz every 3 hrs and loses half of it. She was on Zantac at 3 weeks. Then the MD wanted to try prevacid, but we ran into the prob of the mixing with 1 oz (her entire feeding volume) tried in the feeding and it was way toooooo thick , she was to small for solids so we found the Chocosite and we are now trying her dose (15mg) mixed with caracream. She now only has to endure 2.5ml twice a day. We are not sure if she is having an allergic reaction or not right now.Her little cheeks are flushed..no rash just the flushed face, Anyone else have this reaction to the med or mixer???please let us know because the caracream is great if it is not causing a reaction.
thanks

My Target pharmacy ordered the Prevacid SoluTabs which I hold in my fingers and Delainey (5 mos. old, 9 weeks premie) sucks until it dissolves. It dissolves fast. My pediatrician did not prescribe at first, but the pharmacy knew of it. Hope this helps!

My little Abigail is 6 weeks old, and was put on Omaprazole (Prilosec) last week. No rashes, but a flush face as Ginny spoke about: [quote="Anyone else have this reaction to the med or mixer???please let us know because the caracream is great if it is not causing a reaction."

She is on suspension medication (in liquid form), and does not like it very well ... 1/2 ml twice daily... but her new thing is to gag out of the blue, hours after she's been fed. DR will see her on Monday to possibly "up" her dose. She still chokes every once in awhile when being fed, but is at 2 3/4 oz. every feeding but has only gained 1 oz. in the past two weeks. I'm hoping that we will ba one of the fortunate families and Abigail will grow out of this. I'm also interested in keeping in touch with others who have small infants with this ailment.

All my Best to you and your little ones ...

Hi and welcome. You've come to the right place to meet with other parents of refluxers. My youngest son, Evan, has probably had reflux since birth, but was only diagnosed at 1 1/2 years. He is now 26 months old, and is HOPEFULLY going to be one of those lucky kids who outgrows it.

I look forward to sharing mutual support with you, through the good days and the tougher days.

Hi there and welcome! We are glad to have you.

I'd just keep an eye on the flush face and mention it to the ped the next time you speak to him...wouldn't worry too much about it. Has your doctor discussed fortifying her formula...they can beef it up with 24 or 27 cals per oz to help her put on a little more weight while she is not eating so great.

The good news is, the odds are definitely in your favor that she will outgrow it in the next few months...until then, we're here to help you survive  .
