Hello I am a grandmother of a three month old. I am very concerned about him. Julius has been crying loudly like a high pitch scream, his body arches and his head moves back and forth. I want to know if this is a normal sign of reflux babies? The pediatrician say's he has reflux. He is gaining weight and does vomit, sometimes a lot. I am just concerned because of the arching he does and he keeps his fists closed and he screams if he is moved at all. I want to just ask others who have babies with reflux if they experience this too? I am very concerned here and would like an answer ASAP. He does not sleep very well and I have him for a week but I am thinking I should take him back to his mother and making her take him to the hospital. He is on Zantac which I read causes side affects of arching and other symptoms. I am worried that this may be making his arching worse. If anyone can answer my questions I would really appreciate it. I am at my wits end here and I do not like seeing my grandson suffer it is tearing my heart out. Thanks!

Hi Granny,

It does sound like symptoms of reflux. The zantac may not be working for him and he may need a PPI like prilosec or prevacid. It's very painful to watch them go thru this, and I don't know why any doc would let a baby cry like that.

I hope she does take him back to the pedi or find a pedi GI, have her suggest a PPI, and I'll bet you will have a grand new grandson.

Welcome to the boards!!

Back arching and not sleeping are two of the most common symptoms of reflux...and of course vomiting. If he is on Zantac and still screaming, arching and not sleeping then it's not working...Jean is right, he should go back to the ped and have your daughter tell him she would like to try a proton pump inhibitor like Jean mentioned, more info on reflux meds is available on the main website at http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com under treatments. Make sure to describe the symptoms well.

You are not alone, we all know how hard it is to watch them suffer through this...I hope you get some answers and a better med soon! Please keep us posted.
