Hi Amy,
Branden has been congested and has had a stuffy nose, especially at night and after naps, almost since birth. He spent 5 days in the hospital last month, while they tried to figure out why and we came home with no answers. Since reading some stories on this website and others, I finally realize that this is a symptom of reflux and is most likely the answer we had been looking for...just wanted to let u know. :)

I "voted" no, but we do find that if Evan has a bit of a cold or is teething, etc., he gets a runny nose. It's often clear, but it sure does set of the vomitting. Today has been one of those tough days, with lots of cleaning him up and lots of laundry, so he'll probably be up vomiting and crying lots over night. Does anyone else find that their kid gets a runny nose first and then vomits a lot?

Hi Janette. Thanks for voting.
Trent wakes up with a stuffy nose every morning, and has since birth. I have to suction him out every morning. Sometimes it is so thick I have to spray with nose drops first. I have noticed that when it is runny and clear, he does vomit more, and his vomit has mucus in it, so I just always associated it with it going down his throat.
That is the reason I posted the poll. I have taken Trent to the doc numerous times about his nose, and they just say "allergies". I think it is associated with the reflux in some way and wanted to see how many others out there were the same way.

michael has also always been stuffy. i did not know it was a symptom of reflux. thanks. he does also throw up more with the clear runny nose and it does usually look flemmy! the dr kept telling me he had a cold but he never had any other symptoms.

Yes, for many refluxers the runny nose and the vomit go hand in hand. I hate to say this, but from experience the doctor is wrong. It's nearly a year since I voted in this thread and posted that comment. Whenever Evan gets that clear runny nose, he still gets post nasal drip, coughing, restless nights, gagging and vomiting. And yes, the vomit is phlegmy.

it makes sense. i argued with the dr over and over telling him it was not a cold and wanting to know what was wrong with my son. i guess now i know. thank you. i felt like i was going crazy.they always have me second guessing myself.

I'm glad I was able to help. I've had those discussion with doctors who didn't know, too. It was the ped. respirologist who was finally able to help!

it looks like the flemy pukey road is the one we're starting down today. i tried to suction him and nothing will come out. i know there's lots in there, i can hear him and he almost gags when trying to breath. if i could just give a good cough and blow for him. poor baby :(

Suctioning never worked for us either. There's a little rubber plunger-type thing that we used to use to loosen the phlegm for Evan. We had to be trained in it, though. I'm sorry that I don't know what it's called.

Owen always has a stuffy nose after he wakes up in the morning and after nap time. When it gets really bad he'll gag and vomit from it.

Always stuffed up and I have never been able to get anything out. Nothing but a little formula now and then. Always worse in the morning and after sleeping too.

Now when I look back I can see the runny drippy nose, reflux connection. Wow! Some of our worst times I remember wiping that nose that normally was so plugged up.

He's only been able to breath through his nose a handful of times that I can remember. Just enough to make it all harder to figure out, ya know ('')

I voted yes also, even though I am not a child or infant. My entire life I have been so stuffed up.....allll the time. I feel like a dog panting. They (four different allergy testing) say I am not allergic to anything, sensitive to everything I guess.

Now after years of this heavy breathing I finally had the sinus surgery. I was diagnosed with reflux and asthma, probably was a silent refluxer all along and never knew it.

I also get severe pressure in my head and headaches when I am stuffed up, so if your little ones seem cranky when they are stuffy; could be a headache also. I am now on prescription nasal spray.

Just wanted to complain a bit. I hate being like this.

For sure!

Sam has a continous cycle - On antibiotic - clears up - 10 days later - runny nose (yellow/green) - coughing increases - antibiotics - clears up - etc . . . My GI says there is nothing he can do for it - Pediatrition says that it is reflux related Grrrr. What to do. I hate having him on antibiotics all the time!

When he has a runny nose/coughs more his reflux is so much worse - probably due to the cough and gagging on the mucous in his throat.

On antibiotics now so we will have a few good days. Give me two weeks and we will be back to a ton of puking :(

Oh well - the joys of reflux.
