My son LJ is 5 weeks old and shows many of the symptoms of reflux. I will be speaking to his doctor tomorrow. I was concerned last week with him spitting up all of the time and crying after feedings. He also awakens very breifly to change postion while sleeping. I was told that I was over reacting since I am a first time mom. I am currently breast feeding and am wondering if it is my milk that is causing this problem. I am glad I found this site I have already learned so much. Any more information or other signs that I can look for would help. Thanks :?

Hi Kelly and welcome to the group!

Chances are very good that your milk is actually helping him not to be worse (see article by Dr Sears on breastfeeding (http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T020600.asp)). Shae always did much better on breastmilk, it was when we had to find formula that she would tolerate that things kept getting worse.

Having said that, there are a small number of babies that are simply lactose intolerant and need hypoallergenic formula. Before trying those try to eliminate everything from your diet that may make reflux worse, for example, spicy foods, caffiene, chocolate (see treatments page for list of offending foods), also keep him propped up during and after his feeds, and while he sleeps...this should help a lot. There are safe, inexpensive medications such as Zantac that can also be tried and should help a lot.

As far as the doctor, I think we can all relate to how hard it is to get a doctor to pay attention to our children's reflux. I think that best thing for you to do is make a list of the symptoms of reflux and make a list of his symptoms, start keeping a diary of how much he is eating and how much he is throwing up, also when he starts to scream and for how long. Present all this to the pediatrician and I think he will have to listen to that.

Hope that helps and I look forward to getting to know you.

Hi Kelly and Welcome .My refluxer (Alanna 10 weeks) is my third child,I've been in ltc nursing for over 10 years and her pedi was very dismissve with my concern about her reflux..Don't back down be assertive and make sure they address it...Alannas' reflux kicked in when she was about a week or 2 old ,it started the same way, she'd wiggle and whine during nursing then she's throw up like a teenager at a keg party .It was and is very stressful and fustrating.I'm also breastfeeding and that in itself has been an experience.I was very close to discontinuing breastfeeding her because i honestly felt it was making matters worse . Now i'm glad i'm still hanging in .she seems to do alot better with breastmilk ,but i have to be very careful about what i eat.And speak of the lil devil ,she's calling ..... Hang in Kelly I hope everything works out for your son and yourself .You'll find alot of good ideas and advice here

How did the appointment go, Kelly? What did the doctor say?
