Ok so as of most recent KC has been on this crazy rollar coaster and I am not sure what it's from. He is going to be seeing a Dev ped soon for testing for Aspergers b/c of many different things. Well lately he is on this kick of not wanting to wear shoes and socks. And the most recent thing is I have to cover him up with his special blanket or he throws the most horrible fits. Kicks, screams, hits and anything else you can imagine it gets pretty bad. If you touch his trains without permission well you can almost guess that we go into full nuclear meltdown. THe only time I can clean his toys up is when he is sound asleep and I swear he knows as soon as he gets up.

Well anyway. My question to you all is have you all experienced this at one point or another? Does any of this sound like Aspergers? My nephew has it and he is very obsesive over anything orange. In the case of KC, he is obsessed with his trains and everything has to be kept where he leaves them or there will be :censored: to pay. KC's OT and his ped want him tested asap due to the fact he will be aging out of early interventions in august and heading into the school system. I would love any input you all can give me.

No real input, just a ...sounds so much like Ava. They didn't put her on the spectrum, but we had sort of expected them to, kwim? Ava is a sensory MESS...you should see the gigantic dreadlock in her hair right now...she will NOT let us touch her to brush it, and I have the feeling I'm going to have to get scissor happy. Even w/ Dave holding her today and pinning her to his chest, I still couldn't get it. She was screaming bloody murder and trying to throw herself backwards over his shoulder, I was sweating. This is all day everday, anytime we try for clothes, hair, shoes, etc.

I hope you get some answers, Lauren! Our dev. ped was wonderful.

I can't say either ...but sounds like some of Jaydens tendencies too....he gets very angry if the things he lines up are moved....or with him he will get dressed but the min those shoes are on his feet ...we had be heading out the door or he turns into a pile of screaming mush on the floor.....I hope the Dev Specialist has some answers for you ...I will be interested to hears what they say....when does he go?

If KC is aging out in August you better haul butt to get a developmental ped evaluation thru EI....It's a 3 - 6 month wait..

We are going through Children's. I am waiting to hear back from them. EI was one one who told me to get him looked at. He will have a de therapist that comes into our house as soon as everything goes through.

He just went through a big meltdown today over his trains.

Well, on their own such behaviours are unlikely to place KC on the spectrum, but as part of a bigger picture, then yes they can be AS tendencies. Harry is like that BUT there is a LOT else going on. Food aversions, v v powerful sense of smell, acute hearing and other sensory probs, delayed communication and absolutely no social skills at all. Poor eye contact, physical issues (dyspraxia often goes with AS) and no concept of others thinking anything different to him. the list is endless! There is a FANTASTIC book, The complete guide to Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood which is an easy to read, v informative book.

My only concern is that he is pretty young to diagnose Asperger's. Not to say he doesn't have AS tendencies or that he does not have AS; however, usually that's picked up a bit later on, usually in elementary school or even sometimes later, as it becomes pretty clear then what's going on.

It's been my experience that kids at this age are either labeled PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder...which means, "We think s/he's on the spectrum or something, but can't quite figure it out), they're diagnosed somewhere on the Autistic Spectrum, or they're given some sort of sensory/processing disorder dx. I don't ever remember seeing a kiddo on the infant-preschool unit with AS. They were always diagnosed on SAU (School age Unit).

Again, this is not to say that it's not Asperger's...it's just that he is young and I'd hate for them to label him incorrectly early on, KWIM?

*Sigh* I'm really sorry Lauren. I hope they're able to shed a bit more light on this for you, though.

I was told that they can show signs as early as 3 years old. He does have alot of other things besides meltdowns. He does have sensory issues, Everything but smell. He has issues with bright lights, loud noises, and touch and has an issues with different textures of food. He has to have his sunglasses on when we leave the house or if things are to bright in the house. We can only use 40 watt bulbs in our house and that's pushing it a bit. As you can imagine it is really dark in our house.
