Nicholas was put on prednisone on Tues. He was given 5mls twice a day. I think that is too much for him. He is all puffy and just miserable. He can't sleep and doesn't typically eat. He is still breathing fast around 50's. He does have times he breathes normal though. But today has been the worst. He is breathing fast most of the day. He isn't quite as tight. He is starting to wheeze a little now. When do I worry that he isn't getting better and should take him in? He isn't playing much at all. He will on occasion get down to play for about 5 mns at a time. Any suggestons? I am just not sure if i should be worried still or just wait it out. Thanks for any help.
It sounds like he is improving. Often, as the bronchospasm resolves, you wheeze louder as the airways relax and more air starts moving through the airways. As it continues to improve, the wheezing diminishes as the airways open further. Refresh my memory, does Nicholas use Albuterol or Xopenex?? These would help to relax the airways further. As for the prednisone, that dose sounds ok to me. I don't know his weight and haven't calculated the exact dose, but it doesn't sound too far fetched right off the top of my head.
As for when to go back in...whenever you're feeling uncomfortable with the situation, trust your mommy instincts. If you don't feel like he is getting better, at the very least call the office and touch base with your provider. If you don't feel that a phone call would be sufficient, take him back in. If he begins to "work" harder (retractions, nasal flaring, grunting) go in. If he turns dusky gray or blue (starting around the mouth and nose at first) go to the ER.
Good luck, I hope Nicholas is feeling better soon.

Thank you. I am taking him back in this am. He is breathing faster. He is also very weak. This has been a week now and he still isn't playing or eating. I do think in some ways he is getting better and other ways he is staying the same. Something is stll wrong. I just don't know what. Nicholas does use albuterol. I have been giving it to him every 4 hours. I only gave him one dose of prednisone yesterday. The poor baby was so swollen that I couldn't get myself to give him the second dose. So we will se what his ped says. He is 18 lbs.
