It has been a very long time since I have been on here.... I actually joined b/c of my youngest daughter Alexis she has GERD.

But now I have been noticing symptoms in my 3 year old son and I think that he may have Reflux also and prob. has since an infant.

4 Mos. after he was born he had Torticollis and was in PT for over a year. Riley was such a happy infant we would call him Smiley Riley.... I cannot say the same about him now; he is very easy aggitated and flies off the handle. He hits on his older and younger sisters. He will pinch them so hard that they will bleed.... No matter how many times I have put him in timeout he always resorts to this behavor.....

On x-mas day we were at my mother in-law's house having a good time, he was eating a cookie but decided 1/2 way through, that he no longer wanted it. He walked up to the garbage can and started to spit it out. He had this awful look on his face and I asked are you going to puke and he shook his head yes. So I grabbed him and began to run to the bathroom well not soon enough.... He threw up all over the kitchen floor and bathroom floor.... After vommitting he was totally fine....

3 days later same exact thing happened and he threw up but then totally fine after that.... Before these 2 incidences he has always vomitted and gagged very easily. I remember when he started eating solids thinking to myself man he chokes more than any other little kid I know.... But just brushed it off to every kid is different. He gets car sick very easily too... He recently has been frequently complaining of tummy aches..... Am I overreacting or doesnt this sound like reflux????

Sorry this is long.

:sad3:

Hi Jennifer!

It is hard to say if it is reflux or not. I know that my now 6 year old will run to the garbage can or toilet (if he has the time!), barf, and then be on his merry way and no worse for wear. It could be your son has texture issues, a prominent gag reflex, or reflux. I would keep track of the instances and talk to him a bit more to see how he describes what is going on. I know with Curran he would say his tummy hurt and when I asked him to point to where it hurt he would point to his throat and chest, not his stomach. Sometimes we take it for granted that they actually mean stomach when they do not.

If it continues, you may want to try some OTC med (consult your pharmacist) to see if that alleviates some symptoms. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. That would mean that if you treat it as reflux and there is a good response, it likely is reflux, KWIM?

Never a bad idea to get it checked out when you are at the ped next time, either. Just because you have had some vomitting, it does not mean that you will necessarily have to have a second child on meds, either. My oldest refluxes, but few and far between and has NEVER been medicated other than OTC and only as needed. Like all children, they can go through stages and if they have a tendency towards reflux, then they can have flares, too where it will seem much worse. It is so tough when they are at the age where they can finally communicate, but not quite well enough for you to fully grasp what is going on.

It is hard to know if it is reflux or not. I would talk to his Dr about it for sure though.

My sister always had a week stomach and would puke all the time. She still has problems as an adult, but no one has ever found anything that could be causing it.

I hope you can figure out what is wrong and get him feeling better.

Thank you very much you guys; My youngest has a doc. appointment on the 6th for her 18 month check and I think that I am going to keep track of his symptoms and talk to his doc. then and see what he says....

Im sure that he is fine but it never hurts to bring it up while I am there ya know....

Thanks for listening and for your help.

Good luck with the appt! :) I think it's a great idea to keep a log of his symptoms and even foods that may have triggered things.

It is always a great idea to keep a log of things as you can see patterns emerge that way and it is more accurate as you have written it down and are not guessing.

I look forward to hearing from you on how the appointment goes.
