View Full Version : Pacifiers
Katicabogar 12-12-2007, 08:56 PM Do your babies with reflux/GERD use a pacifier? Does it help them?
Syd loves her's and I've read that using a pacifier can actually cut down on the refluxing (don't know where I read it though)
Christine 12-12-2007, 09:14 PM Henry started using a pacifier at about 4 months. When his reflux peaked and he started teething. Now he is almost 17 months old and is a paci addict. It is his one thing.
I am not sure about making the reflux better though.
Brenna has always been a "binky" addict, too. She has had hers since she was NPO in the NICU for 3 days. Like Henry, it is her "one" thing. I don't know how I will break the habit, but for now, it's hers.
Carrie 12-12-2007, 09:18 PM Brice really liked his paci until just recently... We realized about a week ago, that he barely uses it anymore! But I do think up until then it was a lifesaver!!!!!
Trubiedoos 12-12-2007, 09:28 PM Dayton is a complete paci addict. He began his love affair with it the same week that his reflux got so bad and we had our upper GI. Nowadays he can't live w/o out it and sucks especially aggressively on it when he's having a really bad reflux day.
sixdogssixcats 12-12-2007, 09:29 PM My daughter never took a pacifier, as much as I tried to get her to! She wasn't too keen on anything in her mouth.
AllieandJacksProudMama 12-12-2007, 09:49 PM Allie was (and is) a total paci kid.
Yes, the paci does help kids with reflux. Something about stimulating saliva to help relieve acid production. I"m almost positive it's one of the things on the main page of this site telling you how to naturally help reflux.
Miori 12-12-2007, 09:57 PM Yep, my son LOVED his paci as a baby, and still has it at night. I know, he's two..but I'm not ready to deal with that battle just yet. As he got older, I restricted it to nap/bed time only. But he was younger, it gave him so much comfort and I do think it helped to calm him too.
miki is THE gogoly ( paci) monster she loves her gogoly but godhelp anyone who tryes to dip it in her neocate its a 3 hour screaming match as punishment lol but yes definately we find it helps with her reflux
Twins plus Two 12-13-2007, 01:35 AM A pacifier causes increased saliva production through sucking, which helps neutralise stomach acid so it usually does help babies with reflux. I swore I would NEVER give my kids one but ate my words when they all had reflux!

alwaysangels97 12-13-2007, 06:44 AM Thank God for the pacifier!!! Thats all I have to say! My pediatrician got on me early about getting Gabriel off of it so i took him off at 10 months. I regreted it ever since. Yeah I do not have the battle of taking it away but I've also had a terrible sleeper ever since and wished I still had it for the times we had to put him through the nightmares of the feeding tubes and all the tests he had gone through. Rylan loves it and has it probably 23 out of the 24 of the day. He has about 8 of them in his crib so when he wakes up screaming he can now find them himself and I dont have to get out of bed. These kids aren't like other kids, they are in pain and if the pacifier helps in anyway, then give it to them! We try and do anything we can to ease the pain for these guys.
MadalinesMama 12-13-2007, 07:48 AM Maddy Bugs has a "nuk" - and many days it is a Godsend....Maddy tends to at time "comfort eat", particulary when she is having a rechid day refluxing...and hence, when she does this, she spits up more, and then there is more laundry and well...we all know how that is. So, I (and my mom and my dh) have all learned to recoginize these days, and that is wher her "nuk" comes into play.
Bugs is almost 5 months, and I have noticed that she seems to take it less and less, but has to "know" that it is availabe should she want it. For example, last night, about 11pm she woke up, and it was just out of her reach in the crib - I went it, put it in her mouth, and she immediatly took it in her hand, out of her mouth, and went right back to sleep. Go figure? ....
We're in the club too. Aubrey loves her paci. I'm so no looking forward to the day when we have to take that away (not to mention, I'll feel so bad for taking away her beloved paci :-()
I'm not sure what I would have done with out it though. All the times she wanted to eat but wouldn't, the paci saved us. Gave he something to suck on when she wouldn't take the bottle.
