hi, my son is 10.5 months old and has been has alot of weird behaviours that seem to be getting worse every day... it all started when we noticed when he was very young he hated alot of food textures eg: jelly, anything course or lumpy... and i have noticed other things now such as he hates grass or any flooring with a texture, hates mats and large clothing, hates water, hates changing clothes or nappies (he vomits often with this), he will not touch hair especially when wet and the weird behaviours are multiplying every day..theres always something new he hates. I have noticed also that he has repetitive behaviours alot where he will climb on me for 15 minutes to an hour and will cry if i make him stop, he will spin around sitting on the floor for long periods of time with his hands raised and on his forehead saying ga ga over and over again and he will want me to hold his hands so he can walk and he will repeatedly kick me or an object and again if i try and put him down and let go of his hands he will have a big tantrume untill i let him resume this behaviour. i have been told by a friend that its a possibility that my son has sensory intergration disorder? I have researched this a bit on the internet and have found alot of similarities of the disorder with my son. what is your opinion on this and how would you get an accurate diagnosis of the disorder from? Also can this disorder cause constant vomiting from strong yucky senses of food being in the stomache? other than these bahaviours he is a smiley baby when he is not in pain. btw he has severe GERD and is tube fed awaiting a fundoplication and a gastrostomy. i thought ide add that incase it could mean anything. thank you for your time. tamika.

Hi Tamika:

What a beautiful baby. I am so glad you are getting the NG tube out soon. I do not know how long it has been in Baylee, but it is a CURSE. It exacerbates reflux and weakens the lower and upper esophageal sphincters. Research shows that sensory changes begin to take place after 3 days of having an indwelling NG tube. They make all of my babies aversive to various food textures. The sooner you get the tube out and get the Nissen, hopefully the better Baylee will be. It will not take much for Baylee to vomit. His tube keeps his sphincters wide open, allowing the stomach contents to have an easy pathway to come up and out.

It does sound as if Baylee presents with some sensory issues that may be manifested by the reflux. However, after the surgery and during the post recovery period, you may see some of these behaviors fade or even go away. Most babies with an indwelling NG tube are fairly miserable. I have observed many sensory-based behaviors related to severe GERD and NG tubes. My recommendation would be to quickly get the tube out and have the surgery. If many of the sensory behaviors you are describing do not go away, I suggest you have Baylee assessed by an OT who specializes in SI dysfunction. I hope this helps :)
