Hi

Maiya is 26 months old and still refluxing plenty. In an ideal world, she would see a pulmonologist, but the reality is she sees her GI and ped now once a year only.

She is slightly SOB when running, but otherwise no wheezing or anything. SHe is still very congested- her nasal secretions are still grey and usually marshmallow consistency. Every morning shehas a crusty nose that is difficult to clean, and i can hear the crustiness making air passage difficult. She rubs her nose a lot and has red eyes- her father has seasonal allergies so she might too. I tried claritin- which may have given her relief, but as with most things, they extreme excitability did not outweigh the benefit. I tried saline drops but I just cant get them in her.

She drinks constantly- about 50 ounces of liquid a day!!

Any ideas or coments would be greatly appreciated.

During the winter I used a humidifier What can I do in the summer. Would a vicks vaporizer be of any benefit.?

thanks a million

It does sound like she may have seasonal allergies, however, it also sounds like she may have a sinus infection. Given the stickiness and color of her nasal secretions, I would recommend seeing the ped. She may need some antibiotics.

To answer your question, yes you can still use the humidifier in the summer. The extra hydration would not hurt. The Vicks may also be beneficial. I have been using J&J Vapor Bath for my little one lately. She apparently has seasonal allergies as well. Some benadryl at bedtime may be helpful also, but again, please consult your physician first. I would caution you to stay away from infant decongestants unless suggested by your doctor. There were some alarming side effects seen in infants last winter and the AAP no longer recommends decongestants for infants. These would include things such as Tylenol Cold, Children's Sudafed, Dimetapp, etc.

I hope that Maiya is feeling better soon. These allergies are no fun. We have a mommy, daughter, doctor day tomorrow. We're both in the same boat as Maiya. I hope I was able to answer your question, if not, I'm here, ask away.

Hi and thanks a million

I agree about the benadryl- put it makes her so hyper and then she cant sleep ( iam the same way)

I have been saying SI for over one year but as long as it is not green, the docs here dont want to do anything. I was told to use saline. She hardly has any drainage- another reason they wont take me seriously

Sorry- i need clarification- by decongestant, you mean OTC syrups and stuff? Because I am thinking of being a vicks vaporizer that you add in the liquid vapors as a decongestant- is that OK to use and is that similar to what you are using (dont think we have J and J vaporizer here)..

Thanks alot

PS- i am going to try homeopathic remedy for allergies, it helped her dad so maybe . I never gave these any creedence but i have seen them work wonders for agitation in children and HTN in adults.

I think the Vicks added to the vaporizer would be fine. I was talking about problems with the OTC preparations with pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. I think those issues were mostly related to overdosing, but then again, who knows.

This is what we have been using in her bath. It should be available at most Wal-Mart, Target, etc.
