View Full Version : should i wean her?
nikkib 07-13-2007, 04:31 AM tonight Naomi wouldn't eat her dinner and then i offered her the breast before bed and she had a tiny bit and then started to bite me. she bit me on both sides, and about 6 times. Do you think that this is a sign that my milk is not there? i worry about that. She has been increasingly worse at taking the breast and biting more, but i dont know if i should wean as she wont drink much milk from the bottle or cup. what should i do??? she is 16months this week.
If you're concerned about your milk not being there, try pumping a bit and see what you get.
Otherwise, it could be a couple of other things--Naomi might be teething and/or testing limits in that respect or she might be trying to wean herself. Is she actively asking/indicating that she wants to nurse? If so, the biting might be resulting from less milk or her own discomfort (be it teething, belly ache, etc.). Is she passive/disinterested when you offer the breast? If so, she might be ready to wean.
Bethany was a constant nursling and I think she'd still be nursing today if I hadn't weaned her at 20 months(it wasn't my choice, but that's a whole other story!). She, too, had difficulty with the transition from breast to cup but she did get the hang of it. In her case, once the breast was no longer an option, she took to the cup. When she was still nursing, she did have lots of days when she'd bite at me, refuse to eat, etc. It usually signaled that she didn't feel well in some respect.
Only you and Naomi can decide if you're ready to wean. Try to pay close attention to her habits the next few days--it might help you figure out what's causing her biting/refusal to eat.
AvasMommy 07-13-2007, 10:08 AM Ditto. Try to pump and see what you can get. The biting could be a sign of frustration, or she could just be bored w/ it and using all her new teeth just seems like so much fun that she can't help herself. I think this was Ava's thinking about biting...she would look up at me, give me the world's hugest poo-eating grin and then sink her teeth in, following it up w/ a chuckle.
Ava weaned herself at 20-21 mos. She was never big on the cup, still isn't really, but she just decided that she was done. Maybe Naomi is weaning herself? Ava made it pretty clear that she was done (by biting, turning her head, crawling away, etc) that she was done. I wasn't done, which was hard, but this was during another time when Ava was flatout refusing to eat/drink. She had her G tube, but it was useless at that point, so I was really hung up on nursing, so I was worried that she wasn't going to get ANY cals at all.
If it continues w/ no signs of illness/teething, I'd say *sniff, sniff* that she's probably telling you she's done.:sad5:
nikkib 07-13-2007, 05:56 PM thanks Mary and Lindsay,
I am definately not done. I could feed her forever too (wont, but could kwim?). She is the only one out of my 3 kids to breastfeed so i love it and she loves it.
I woke her about 2 hours after i put her to bed and offered her the breast again and she didn't want it, she bit me again and she was so tired and falling asleep, so i left it. Then at about 2.30am she woke wanting it so i offered it and she took it no probs, went to bit me once, but that was towards the end. There was definately milk there, i could hear it gulping down.
I think she likes the reaction to the biting, like Ava, she gives me a cheeky grin :evil4: naughty girl lol. I will see how we go over the next few days. I am definately not making any changes before her op on tuesday and the not wanting to eat much is normal for her so we will see how we go. I am supplementing with pepti junior at lunch now and she has two bf a day now, so hopefully she is getting enough. Her weight has stayed the same for a month now though, so we will see how it goes.
I guess if she is ready to wean herself i just have to go with it...:sad5: lets hope thats not the case...:sad5:
cariberry77 07-13-2007, 11:26 PM First, let me say that I am so impressed that all of you nursed for so long. I am only on ten months, and don' t know how we can go another 10!!! I think it could happen though, since Roman still LOVES nursing - and is now at an age where he can walk over and yank on my shirt when he wants to drink, lol! I know that I have plenty of milk and that he's still interested, but whenever he is teething, he bites me. I don't think he likes the reaction because I scream and then he cries. I just think his mouth really hurts and he doesn't know how to soothe his pain, so he almost involuntarily bites down on whatever is in his mouth, kwim? Maybe Naomi is just getting more teeth? Hopefully after the op she will continue to nurse because it is such a comfort to most babies. Good luck on Tuesday.

Thanks Mary Lynn. Too funny - I was on last night wanting to pm you about how adorable your little man is, but I don't think you have enough posts for pm yet?! Anyway - he's a cutie!
As for the show, it was the 4th of July celebration here and they had a collection of local talent performing - not sure that it would be anyone recognizable - in fact, I don't even remember most of the names!!!
What kind of touring did you do? Are you a musician?
