View Full Version : Nausea before during and after eating

Emilia has been complaining of Nausea for over a year.
At first I thought it was her vitamins, so I had her quit them for a good month to see if there was a change. I forgot to ask her about it, and kinda ignored the situation, and just assumed I found the answer and had her start taking her vitamins on a full stomach and not first thing in the morning. Problem solved.
Well come to find out she never noticed a difference. I don't think it's the vitamins anymore, and I'm getting concerned.

She has lost weight. She got up to 57lbs and before school ended she was back down to 50 and can't seem to put the weight back on. It's summer though, so maybe I'm over reacting.

She has always been a tiny thing (it runs in DHs family. They are super small) but now she looks ridiculously small compared to her peers, and back when she was 8 she started growing hair and showing signs of puberty (early menstruation also runs in DHs family, average starting at age 9). Her breasts even got a little sore, but now nothing other than her moodiness going on. She's only 11, so again I could be over reacting.

Anyway the nausea seems to be getting worse. She wakes early int he morning feeling like she's gonna throw up, (she doesn't, she just goes back to sleep) and if breakfast (or anytime it's been a long time without food) doesn't go well she's been known to barf. Like if she doesn't eat fast enough or slow enough or the right foods RALPH! Usually it happens when I say "Just a minute kiddo, have a piece of fruit while you wait for dinner." and it's like her tummy wanted more than the piece of fruit and eventually rejects it.

Her words "If I wait too long to eat I feel sick, and sometimes I can't eat once I get to that point, but I make myself and I eventually feel better if I don't barf, but it doesn't ever hurt."
Her appetite is very small. It always has been, but she's always been small, and her BMI is always right on with her height so I haven't worried up till now, she never lost weight, she just didn't gain any. KWIM? She loves food though and she eats a pretty well rounded diet for her age.

according to her she doesn't get heart burn, she's regular as regular can be (although she does get the runs here and there, but not diarrhea) and the girl has NEVER had a tummy ache in her life, but she IS super gassy, always has been a little tootin machine.
She's always had motion sickness, but other than that NOTHING GI going on at all until now.
She also has no problems with upper respiratory stuff and is rarely ever sick with anything at all. I can count on one hand how many times she has been ill enough to even miss school.
So what do you think?

Minnie I wonder if it is hormones since she is getting to that age of pubery? She sounded just like me when I was pregnant with the boys, once the all day morning sickness past, it would be just the morning nausea that did it, I would wake and I would be starving cause I had gone all night without food, but have this nausea, if I had breakfast, I would never be sick, but it was so hard to force food down, on most days I would just wait till I was sick, just cause that was easier than eating.

If she is 11, and early puberty runs in the family, it could definately be that, I would suppose it is the same hormone that makes you feel sick when you are pregnant KWIM?

You should get her checked out though, cause she is loosing weight (again could be totally normal) and you don't want that to continue.

Let us know how you get on.

I'm having her keep a food journal for about a week. She started this morning. She had chocolate chip waffles (One of her favorites) I read it and so far...well... I had no idea how she felt about food and eating. She says it's not all the time, so hopefully I get some happy stuff in her diary eventually. Right now I just want to cry. No wonder she doesn't eat much. :(

i just want to tell you of my experience. My whole life i was like your daughter- i was a twig- never could eat and saidd my belly hurt. Later, i always complained of nausea-especially in the morning. Years ago,a doc i worked with heard me say this, that i always wake up nauseous- and he said- that is reflux. I told him he was nuts, tha that i never had heartburn.

Now i have a daughter with pretty severe gerd- and my mom says she reminds her of me as a kid. Maiya is very nauseous- which i thought was the meds, but now i am not sure.

I have been nauseous two weeks straight now- never felt this bad other than pregnant- and it gets much worse if i drink coffee or have chocolate. I also feel like someone kicked me in the stomach.

GER can be hereditary. I am 37 an undiagnosed but i now need to see someone, especially lately.

ALso, emotions can play a huge role in nausea and appetite. Adolescence is a hard time, especially for younger girls today. It might just be a psychosomatic manifestation.

Like i said, dont want to impy anything- just wanted to tell you of my recent issues and my history. If it makes you feel better, after a decade of not eating, when the hormones hit i became ravenous. Now i need to lose 30 pounds!!!

Hormones make me feel much worse- so maybe your daughter is just feeling sick from the hormonal changes- i know that also happened to me.

i dont want to imply that she has GER, but she might need to be assessed by an understanding ped.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I have asked her if she ever feels a sensation of food coming up, heart burn, or if she coughs on "nothing" especially
while she sleeps.
Can you think of anything else I should ask?

She's been keeping a food diary for just over a week now, and the nausea is definatly happening more when she's on empty, which has me a little worried because Eric is the same way. He'll get "Green" (YKWIM) and then ask for stuff to eat, but then not really eat well, but once a little time goes buy and a few more bites get in, their the nausea goes away. In Eric's case he starts refluxing, but with Emilia it's hard to say, but they do seem very similar to me now that Eric symptoms have... grown up a little. They both do better when I keep a good eating schedule going for them, but it's impossible to do this everyday.

She also has been getting the hiccups like crazy lately. She says they hurt like it's cutting off her throat. The past few days have been more hiccups than not for her. Again, just like Eric.

LOL It's funny when ever I start talking the talk and asking her questions she says "Mom I don't have reflux like Eric. I don't hurt. will you stop?"
"but honey, hiccups, not eating well, and nausea are symptoms that you could have a problem with it."
Then the big eye roll comes

I have purposely made all her favorites for the past 2 weeks, for breakfast lunch and dinner, but she still isn't eating well, and her diary makes me want to cry.
Example:
Mom made me choc chip waffles because I asked for them (she eats these a lot). Now I wish I never did they are sitting in front of me and all I want to do is vomit. I wish I could make myself, but I don't have anything in my stomache. I know I have to eat them anyway, so I'll make myself. Why didn't I just ask for one?
She ate them and drank her juice and milk and I had no idea she was forcing herself to do it. She seemed just like her regular Emilia self.
Most of her meals have a negative feel to them either before she eats, while she's eating or after. Mostly before though. I had no idea.:sad5:
Only one happy entry about a milk shake I made for her. She never finished it, but it was all good stuff about it.

Maybe you could get an ultrasound on her belly or Ct scan. Possibly a small hernia?? sometimes they can make you feel nautious and feel full fast.
Also maybe take her for a blood work up and maybe ask if they could test her thyroid.. sometimes that can make kids feel like crap.. and with the weight loss.. its a possibility.
i thought maybe hormones too... but i dont know if that would be affecting her every day kwim?
sorry she's feeling like that :(

Hey Minnie

It sure sounds like it 'could' be reflux....it seems from being around these boards for a while that people can really experience completely different symptoms etc

I've never experienced heartburn or reflux in my life and lately I've had this annoying/aggravating feeling at the back of my throat
THAT'S IT...NOOO other symptoms and the Dr want me to try prevacid
I haven't decided if I am going to try it yet, because it doesn't bother me all the time and doesn't affect my eating/sleeping

I might talk to her ped about her symptoms and see about a trial of pepcid/zantac
Zantac is currently taking the zantac efferdose and they are working really well
I would think after just a few days on zantac etc you would be able to see a difference...if reflux is the problem
