Hi Dr. Olson,

I have a question regarding the growth charts. Is it ever OK to not be on the charts for weight or height? My son Sam is 12 months and has FTT since about 3 months, his weight is been well below 5% but his height has been in the 5-10%. Now at 12 months his height has fell to >5% and his weight is right there almost on the line.

His GI Dr. seems concerned enough to "watch" this for 6 months and then refer him to an endocrine specialist. When I bring this up to his other dr.s they say "oh he may just be a small kid". In your experience/opinion are there just >5% small kids? FYI I am 5'4 and my husband is 5'6.

Thank you very much for your time,
Kerri

Hi,

There are definitely small normal kids. Parents size play an great role in this. I would be inclined to draw a blood test or two to be reassured he is healthy. Perhaps a blood count or a test for celiac disease (Serum TTG with IgA) might be appropriate.

Good luck, Dr. Olson
