Hi ladies:

We started weaning last week, sort of by accident. Roman's been much more interested in eating solids than in breast or bottle, so we're kinda just following his lead. I'm only breastfeeding when he wakes, before his morning nap, at bedtime and then when he wakes up 3-4 times a night. During the day, he takes one or two bottles of formula (3-4 ounces each). The rest of the time he snacks on cheerios, puffs and bits of table food, and one or two jars of purees. How can I be sure he's getting enough to eat? I'm worried that he's not getting enough breastmilk/formula. I read he should get 24-32 ounces a day, but I can't tell how much he eats at each nursing session, so I can't be sure what his daily intake is. He's been really cranky lately - does that mean he's hungry? maybe he's teething? He hasn't been napping well either. What do you think?

I am not too sure exactly how much they are supposed to have. This is what my pead told me:

Up unitl 9 months - 2 meals a day of food which consist of 2 tubs of stage 2 baby food. Plus - no drop in formula intake. Henry did this pretty well.

At 9 months - 3 meals a day of 2 - 3 servings of food at each meal. Either a tub of stage 2 or a serving is the palm of his hand of table food and drop to 3 bottles a day. She said one when he gets up, before bed, and a snacky bottle during the day.

So far here is our schedule:
wake up: 7 oz bottle
9 AM - breakfast - 1 stage 2 fruit, 3-4 tablespoons cereal, cherrios
1 PM - lunch 1 stage 2 fruit and veg, 1-2 tablespoons cottage cheese
before nap - 7 oz bottle
6 PM - dinner - 1 stage 2 meatveg combo and veg, finger food veggies (corn, peas, carrots that I boiled the h@#$ out of. and a vanilla wafer
7:45 - 8 oz bottle before bed

This is what is working for us

Even at 10mths of age, Josh never drank more than 21oz of formula...I wouldn't worry so much about the figures, but gage how he looks and acts to you. Watch for dehydration, etc.

Sounds like he might be teething, based on the behavior you described. Josh never wanted his bottles or even to be fed solids much when his teeth were coming. I think it was just too sensitive on his gums.

Thanks Ladies! It was very helpful to see your schedule Christine. Gives me an idea of what we should shoot for now. Roman is still pretty cranky, but yesterday his paternal grandparents babysat for 7 hours and his Grandma managed to get him to eat four 5-oz bottles, a mashed banana, and a stage-2 tub of mixed fruit!!!! Now why won't he eat like that for me????? Seriously, that's more than he eats in 12 hours at home!!! For example, it is noon here, and he has refused a bottle all day. He did eat two 1/2 tubs of stage 2 foods and some cheerios for breakfast, but no bottle. He breastfed briefly before his morning nap, but that is all he's drank since waking up at 7 am. I just gave him teething drops so maybe the afternoon will go better.....

Hmmm....welll you might try some Mylanta/Maalox too. If his teething is causing a reflux flare, that might do the trick.

Josh always ate better for my mom too!

From what you have written I think that it is enough, the ozs are for full formula fed babies, and breastfed babies are generally less than that. He would be getting enough, otherwise he wouldn't be gaining as well. I know it is always a worry when you breastfeed.
