View Full Version : Eating out?
Katey 05-17-2007, 06:43 AM I am still working on getting the meal idea/recipe sticky up (you guys need to quit posting so much, so I spend all my time reading and not working)
I want to do one for eating out. Dose anyone have any specific dishes at specific restaurant that they know or MSPI safe? Or even just restaurants that have good allergy info on their web site?
So far I have not had much luck. KFC (www.kfc.com (http://www.kfc.com)), Qdoba Mexican Grill(www.qdoba.com), and Damion’s Grill(www.damons.com) have really good allergy info on their web sites. Unfortunately there is not much that is MSPI safe.
okjohnson 05-17-2007, 09:55 AM I have found that for eating out, we ALWAYS bring a backup...I just never fully trust wherever I'm going. When we were in Orlando, we found that everywhere we went, people were very accomidating & would make food for her. When we went to a dinner theater, they made homemade baked french fries for her & steak & steamed broccolli. I had just requested (in advance since it was a dinner theatre) for plain meat (that was fresh/organic...no msg) and plain veggies. I have never had asked for the french fries & they did the research & did those for her. For dessert, they also brought out fresh fruit, which I wasn't expecting since I had brought some snacks for her. (This was at Arabian Nights FYI)
Otherwise, I bring our own food everywhere. Perkins has baked potatoes (request plain...NO BUTTER), but Lilly wont eat them anymore.
Thanks for doing this. :smt041 I'll be glad to see what others have to say.
Katie
Sorry, Katey, I have no help for you on this one, at all. Eating out is always such a dilemma, regardless of any special diet. MSPI is that much worse. It's easy to bring MSPI friendly foods for the kids, but when Mom's on the elimination diet, that creates a real challenge to eating out. I know Outback Steakhouse will do plain potatoes, sweet potatoes, veggies, etc on request.
sixdogssixcats 05-17-2007, 08:47 PM This would be good info to have. Catherine has never eaten a restaurant meal. When we go out, which is frequently, I take a jar of some puree with us. She'll eat that and some crackers or cheerios. Maybe a few fries.
CadysMommy 05-17-2007, 10:20 PM We haven't mastered eating out yet. My ex did, however...sure! Let Cady eat a restaurant, send her home, let mom deal with the poop and rash (can you say idiot?). We eat at home and whenever we go someplace, like a party or to someone's house, I always pack her safe nuggets and a fruit or something. But, restaurants, there's too many chances for cross-contamination.
Leigh 05-17-2007, 10:39 PM I agree with Judy... you always stand the risk of contamination. Unless you have a restaurant with a dedicated Kosher area.
I was surprised a few months ago we took the boys out to St. Huberts and they provided me with their complete list of ingredients for all foods. It was great and helped us to make good choices.
We stick to tried and true and frequent a few restaurants which we know the owners/operators quite well. At one Indian restaurant we have gone to for years they adore the boys and take extra precaution with Curran's dishes. They also alter traditional dishes to cater to his needs. :)
Most of the big chains here understand peanut and milk allergy, but not really into MSPI or anything else yet. Some gluten free is cropping up, though.
When we go out, we always have food for Curran anyway but it is getting much, much easier now as he is progressing in some food challenges! yay!
Not to be a downer, but even if you do find a place that has MSPI or whatever you are looking for, be vigilent and ask EACH time you go as ingredients change.
