Sebastian had his OT eval yesterday. She agreed that he was doing more sucking then chewing on his food and was swallowing large pieces whole. She said he had a much weaker bite on the right side then on the left, but was not sure why that would be.

She agreed with me that it is most likely due to the fact that he did not have much exposure to foods because of the limited amount of foods he could eat. This is what she wants us to do:

get him an electric toothbrush and focus on going over his molars with it.
use the other end of the toothbrush on his cheeks and chin.
let him play biting games with his regular tooth brush, by putting it in the back of his mouth and then pulling it out and making a game out of it, so he will bite down and try to keep me from getting it.
put chicken or other chewing things in the mesh bag feeder for him to chew on. He does not like it with food in it, but she said to just keep offering it to him.
try to find him very crunchy foods.
get foods like large pretzel sticks that I can hold while he is eating and put it right over his molars.
introduce lots of new foods (easier said then done with all his allergies, but I will try)
increase his exposure to messy things, as feeling and identifying textures is part of eating.
She is going to come back in 3 weeks and see how he is doing. She was really confident that he should be much better by then. She thinks we just need to “wake up” his mouth to get him eating properly.

I think it went really well and Sebastian loved her. Once again he was his usually charming self and she said she had a great time working with him.

Cutey Sebastian! It sounds like a good appt. Sam's OT just suggested the mesh bags and the playing in the food. He more or less grabs and throws the food :smt036 We haven't tried the mesh bags yet, but there must be something to it if they both suggested it.

Keep us posted to the progress.

It sounds like Sebastian had a very productive evaluation. :smt041 It's nice to have a plan laid out, and it does sound like it will work. Good luck finding more foods that he can eat. I know how incredibly difficult it is when you have to read every label.

Sounds like you got a good therapist and a good plan in place, Katey! :)
