We have had battles with GERD since birth for Chelsea and so I know all the signs etc for an infant but now I am wondering if my older daughter, MacKenzie, may have reflux. She is 4 and I remember when she was a baby she spit up a lot and had projectile vomitting at night occassionally but reflux wasn't a big thing back then (like it's so long ago:haha: ). Their dad has GER and has problems with it and I read that it may be hereditary. OK - the reason I am wondering now is we having been having major sleeping issues and are going to see a sleep spealist next month. I was reading a sleep book and it said kids that have reflux could have problems staying asleep. She had her tonsils/adnoids out last year and is on her second set of ear tubes. She complains of a sore throat a lot, seems to have frequent colds/sinus infections, troubles with constipation (but she also has mild cp) and complains of her stomach hurting (which could also be related to the constipation). As a baby she was on soy formula but drinks regular milk as well. Since Chelsea is MSPI I am wondering if maybe she is too. Do you think reflux is possible? Not sure if maybe we should ask the doctor about it or ask about maybe seeing the allergist Chelsea goes to?
Thanks for you input!

Definitely something I'd bring up to the doctor. The constant sore throat would be a sign to me, so I'd say definitely worth mentioning, especially given the family history! My dh has always had GER and the more we delve into his childhood, I'd say he was definitely a GERDling.
And btw, Welcome to IRD!:smt036
This is something I would approach the docs with. It's very possible that reflux is a big part of the problem. I definitely believe there is a genetic link for reflux. My dad has a hiatal hernia. In retrospect, I was probably a GERD baby (as was my sister, even more so), and even now I have GERD. I'm really not at all surprised that my dd has GER also. Even if the docs rule it out for your older dd, I would bring it up. It's at least worth checking into.
My cousin's daughter (6 years old) has reflux and is always suffering from a soar throat / horse voice. I agree with the others and would def bring it up with your doc.
Have you tried anything OTC with her? Mylanta makes a children's chewable tab. Just a thought, but maybe the next time she is suffering from a soar throat / upset tummy it might be worth a shot to see if it offers some relief?
Welcome to IRD!!

I would try an OTC as Kel suggested. My 7 year old suffers from time to time and I use OTC for him and it makes a difference. I would also mention it to the ped as sometimes they do not tie everything together. Her sleeping issues, tonsils/adenoids, frequent infections, pain, etc can all be signs of reflux. Then again, they can also all be separate issues as well. I would think that response to a med would give you your answer. Just a thought.
If you have one child who is MSPI it would be essier to do an elimination diet for your daughter and see how she does. Give it at least 2 to 4 weeks to see how it goes and log any differences. You might even see the constipation clear up. ;) Be sure to address this with your ped first though as any diet changes should be done with the advice of a physician.
Keep us posted.

Sorry I am really really late on this, but I was wondering how you got on with the sleep specialist and what their take was on it. I do think that it is a good possibility.
Here is a link to 2-11 years symptoms.
