View Full Version : Odd question re: Maalox and b'feeding...

The Ad Man's reflux is really getting unbearable. He CONSTANTLY jams his little fists into his mouth and now holds the record for most consecutive pukes in a short amount of time (a record formerly held by his sister). Last night, between midnight and 2:30am, he barfed all over himself, his co-sleeper, me and my bed not once, not twice, but 3 times. :sad3:

Sooo...he's taking Pepcid and Maalox. He HATES taking the Maalox--he screams, gags/chokes and ends up either spitting it out or barfing it right back up. The few times he keeps it down, it really seems to help him for a little while.

I had an idea...what if I take the Maalox? Would enough of it be expressed in my b'milk to make much of a difference in him?

Hmmm I have often thought of things like that I would have to say no on this one though. If it were a medication like the pepcid or zantac I would say it may work, but then it would be hard to get the dose in. But since the nature of the antacid is to decrease acid content, by the time it got through you to him, I doubt it would pass through.

Also the fact that you can use it while breastfeeding generally leads you to beleive that it won't pass into the milk.

Have you tried the mylanta cherry supreme? It tastes good, you could use one of those pacifier dosers, if he likes a dummy, these will work I think for something like mylanta.

Poor Adam. Mary, Rachel's idea to try the mylanta supreme is a great one. We have an almost full bottle of the mint flavored maalox in the fridge that Roman would never take. He doesn't LOVE the mylanta, but at least he will take it. We just use a syringe to administer 1/2 tsp, a little at a time and it works well. Maybe is the pepcid not working? Have you tried different meds? I feel so bad for you both. I know what a nightmare it is to change the bedding, your pajamas, and the baby's clothes in the middle of the night. EXHAUSTING!!! Is anything you're eating aggravating his reflux? I know if I eat chocolate, peanuts or large quantities of dairy, Roman's reflux gets much worse... Hope you get Adam under control soon....

I don't know about your theory Mary but you should ask the DR about it...wouldn't that be awesome if you could take a low dose and maintain a steady level of it in your breast milk...interesting...
Other than that i can only suggest you give him tiny bits at a time so he almost doesn't know he's getting it.....
Let us know if you ask the doc about this

I agree with Rachel - I think it would already be broken down by your stomach enzymes - and not be able to be significantly absorbed into your blood stream and then excreated into your breast milk.
I used mylanta supreme too - Henry has always liked the sweet taste.
Sorry the "Ad-man" is having troubles. I was hoping you would get a free pass with him.

I wonder how it might be with prescription meds...Like the Previcid..you can't take many drugs because it will pass threw the breast milk ...I wonder if any reflux drugs would do the same?????

Well that Debbie I think would work, but then you wouldn't get the right concentration, if children need adult doses, then Mary would have to be on like 50 times the dose to get it right KWIM?

Good idea Nik about the EBM

I'm gonna have to say no on this one too...I don't think Maalox/Mylanta are quite strong enough to come out in a concentration that would even help him. I always wondered about that when I was taking Reglan to increase my milk supply. Ava was already on it, so they said that even if it was expressed, it wouldn't make much difference.

Gee, I hope you can get him to take it since it seems to help so much. Brenna used to just suck the Cherry Mylanta Supreme out of a syringe (it does taste yummy, I've borrowed hers when my reflux flared). Nikki's idea about mixing it with some breast milk sounds like it might work, too.

Thanks for the advice, ladies. It was worth a try! *LOL*

Adam is becoming increasingly orally defensive. He used to take EBM in a bottle. No more. When he nurses, he takes in as little of the breast as humanly possible to still get milk. He used to take a binky. Now it just makes him gag. When I try to give him his Pepcid and the cherry flavored Maalox, he gags (even though I do just what I did with B--a drop or two at a time). He flinches when we touch him around the mouth. *ACK!*

I am going to try the Mylanta cherry surpreme that some of you recommended. We do see the GI tomorrow, so maybe he'll have some ideas...or perhaps a new med. :-(

Thank goodness you have that appointment tomorrow. I hope you get suggestions that get his reflux under control soon. It makes me so sad to read that he's becoming defensive. I so want you to have a happy healthy EATER!! Make the GI listen tomorrow Mary!!!

Mary - asked my doc about that as well as lactaid for possible milk sugar allergy, etc. and sadly, the answer is no. Mylanta wont administer through your breast milk.

Wouldn't that be grand, though.......much easier administering.
