Hello, My 6 month old was switched to alimintum formula about 3 weks ago due to a suppected milk intolerance. Her appetite really started to decrease she went from 6 oz every 3 hrs down to 1-2 oz every 3 hrs she also had mucus in her stools and spit up. She would sleep for 10hrs wake up and not be hungry at all. Also after the 10 hrs when waking up she would be really gassy. If I tried to get her to eat she would gag or throw up. Its odd because she was on good start before and done great for about a month or so. Well we switched to allimintum (as directed by doctor) and the doc increased her axid to 1ml 2 times a day. It took her about a week to get back to 6 oz but she did for about another week but now she is right back where she started 1-2 oz feeding. I have tried to feed her more often but she just wont do it. She continues to have mucus spit ups and stools and is still really gassy. So now I wonder why the switch to begin with. She is a healthy thriving baby, should I worry? Thanks.

Hi,
I assume your doctor feels she has GERD as well as a milk protein sensitivity. If she was doing well on the Good Start, a partially hydrolyzed milk formula (Alumentum is a completely hydrolyzed milk based formula) then I would change back. Clearly there is something about the taste of the Alumentum that she doesn't favor.
I'm not sure if this answers your question. If not, send me another one explaining your problem further.
Good luck, Dr. Olson

Thank you so much for your quick response. On the good start is when her appetite started to decrease. She done very well on good start at first, for over a month, but then is when her appetite started to decrease. What I though what was odd is why she done so well at first on goodstart. I would think a milk intolerance would show up immediatley, not a month after being on it. When switching to the alimintum she was was ok for a week but then started to take 1-2 oz per feeding again. Is it possible its not the formula? Since now she is doing this as well with the alimintum.

Hi,
I'm glad she is doing better and eating OK. I agree with you totally that if the formula was the culprit one would see symptoms earlier. I'm not sure what is going on but probably not the formula. The only disadvantage of the Alumentum is the expense. If she is doing well, continue this and then after a few months discuss the wisdom of going to anything cheaper for the long haul.
Happy Easter, Dr. Olson
