Hello and thanks a million for being on this site.

Do you have any suggestions on a book or ressource for disciplining a chronicly ill chid. I am in hell because I have a toddler with severe reflux. We are first time parents, so we would have spoiled her anyways, but this is ridiculous. Whenever she gets upset, she throws a fit and immediately vomits. Yesterday, she vomitted three times in one hour and then refluxed all night long because of it.

Our pediatrician , who is a strong cry it out advocate, has told us to never do CIO with her and to keep spoiling her, as he saw one of her episodes and was astonished by it.

We have always kept her ridiculously calm and have rigidly enforced naptimes and bedtimes. The problem is that her reflux is not controlled at all with meds, so the kid is completely exhausted- hence more tantrums

We try to choose our battles - but she is becoming more and more manipulative and throwing these fits whenever things dont go her way

I am in reflux hell with a teething, toddler who is becoming more and more a brat.

I have to say, the last few days, i have been more stern and the tantrums seem to be lessening a bit. But the immediate negative repercussions are hard- especially since we try so hard to keep her calm and to get her to eat.

Thanks for any suggestions or ressources

Hi,

I would discipline her just like anyone else. If she pitches a fit, I would ignore this, despite the constant threat of "reflux". When she stops her escapade, I would immediately pick her up and hold her. I can't think of how this will be harmful to her and her GI system.

I may be missing something here, but I would stop this behavior just like a would in any other healthy child.

Good luck, Dr. olson
