View Full Version : Breastfeeding....how long? and how many?
nikkib 03-20-2007, 10:09 PM Naomi just turned one and I am trying to wean the lunchtime feed. she has gone 2 days so far, and I have expressed still just incase it all goes bad. She is not doing so well today, don't know wether it is because she had morning sleep and wants the comfort, but she only drank 20ml of milk through the sippy. :sad3: but did have some fruit and yogurt and cheese for lunch. She is in bed crying now as we speak....OH what to do??!!
so my question is, how long did you breastfeed your baby and if for over one year, how many breastfeeds were they having at 12 months a day.
Moonbmr72 03-20-2007, 10:36 PM Two from September to December - right before his nap and at bedtime. After the "penny incident" around X-Mas we dropped to one just before bed at night. That is where we are at now. I think it's more for comfort than anything.
He's 18 months.
I'm not going to try to completely wean him any time soon. He dropped all the other feeds on his own. Hopefully this one will drop as well when I transition him to his crib after his tube is out. Right now all the angry flaling if I refuse to nurse before bed really blows with the tube attached to him. It's not worth the fight. I need him to sleep to grow, so if he needs to nurse to sleep at night, so be it. He's been through enough!
nikkib 03-20-2007, 11:32 PM so Krista, what is payton getting through the tube? I think that Naomi will have the morning and night for ages as she doesn't eat all that much. What do they need in milk at her age? does anyone know?
AvasMommy 03-21-2007, 06:29 AM Ava was always a sipper and a snacker...never took very much at a time. I nursed her until about 20 mos, and she completely weaned herself (on a side note...I STILL have milk!!! It's crazy...will I be lactating forever???). I nursed her whenever I could, just to try to get cals and fluids into her.
I b'fed Bethany until she was 19 months old and she, like Ava, was an all-day snacker. She did not eat solids/purees and pretty much survived on b'milk with the occasional cup of rice milk supplemented with rice protein powder.
I'm b'feeding Adam now and I plan to keep b'feeding him until he weans himself; however, let's all hope that he actually takes an interest in food! :-)

I hate to tell you this Lindsay but I weaned Ali completely at 9 months and was still leaking milk over two years later. Hot showers and a baby crying really set things off. After weaning Tressa I dried up pretty quick (they must of known I was done having babies!)
AvasMommy 03-21-2007, 02:40 PM Well, Pam, LOL, that really makes my day! At least I know I'll be able to sustain her if we get stranded in the woods or something!:haha:
But seriously...2 years?!?!?! I don't have a ton, but it's definitely still there...and there's no crying baby here (well, dh, but he doesn't really count!:evil4: )!
nikkib 03-21-2007, 07:46 PM thanks for all your replies. I guess the thing is this...Naomi eats, not much, but she likes food and does eat, so I don't know if all the breastmilk is necessary. I mean how much milk do they need at that age? She will have the cup with watered down cows milk at lunch for the last 3 days, but only drinks about 20ml. is that enough?? I am expressing off 100ml at lunch, so I guess thats what she was taking before I stopped. I am still expressing just incase I change my mind.
She LOVES her morning and night feed. I don't know, I guess I just thought if i get rid of the lunch one I have more freedom to go places and not have to take her. is that selfish? yep. Don't get me wrong though i do NOT want to wean her fully as she really needs the cals and I am not ready to stop its just the middle of the day...why do I feel so guilty?? Am I doing the right thing???! she is still so tiny so I can't afford her not to drink either....
AvasMommy 03-21-2007, 07:50 PM I say, if she cuts it out on her own, fine, but if you do decide to cut it out, make sure she's drinking whole milk or a supplement as that "snack" in the middle of the day, kwim? And no, it's not selfish to want a little freedom back...you've put in a LOT of work!
nikkib 03-21-2007, 08:08 PM well at the moment she will eat 1 piece of bread without crusts and maybe a small tin fruit or yoghurt if you are lucky...on a good day. Then I give her the milk, and she takes about 20ml but she will drink water...is that enough do y0ou think?
