View Full Version : Really good Early On apt.
Katey 03-19-2007, 01:38 PM I have been worried about Sebastian not chewing his food. It talked to the ped and the GI about it and they did not think it was a problem. I have been bothered by it, so I contacted Early On.
We had our first meeting today and it went really well. I have been thinking that I was totally overreacting and they would just blow me off, but she felt it was a very legitimate concern and that OT a couple days a month would be a good idea for him.
She has a daughter that had reflux and milk protein intolerance, so we had a really good talk. It was funny, she saw the Mylanta, Nurtamigen, and Earth’s best cereal on the counter and asked if he had reflux and protein intol. I guess we can all recognize one of our own! She was really impressed by my medical history that I had all typed up. I was so excited, none of the Dr.s have been interested in even looking at it.
He has to have the formal evaluation next week. It is kind of a waist of time, because said he already qualifies, because he does not feed himself with a spoon. They don’t even assess eating they just ask if he self feeds. I really don’t think he has any other problems, so the assessment that they will do is really not necessary, but I guess it can’t hurt to check it out.
kerrinry 03-19-2007, 01:51 PM First off, how are you feeling?
We just went through early intervention assessment. Sam will have OT and PT for a while. It's funny how certain people are interested in certain things. Like we can see 3 doctors with the same problem and each one has a different reaction. I think that's a great idea having Sebastian's medical history typed. I may steal that idea. I'm sick of repeating it over and over and then worry that I missed something.
I'm glad you will get some help.
That's great, Katey. I'm sure it was soo nice to have somone listen to you and someone who could actually relate!
Miori 03-19-2007, 01:59 PM Sounds like a good meeting! :) I think it's wise to take advantage of those kind of services...hope that it all goes well, Katey!
AllieandJacksProudMama 03-19-2007, 02:35 PM That's great Katey. Was it Cara Gorman? That's who came to our house and she was very nice.
If he will be getting OT, will it be from Rhonda? That's who comes out for Allie and she is AWESOME!!!!
Let me know, we can compare notes.

Katey 03-19-2007, 02:51 PM Yep it was Cara. I really liked her and so did Sebastian, he was all over her and he is usually not like that. She did not say who the OT would be. I am glad that you like the one you are seeing. I was a little worried I would go through all the hassel and then not like the therapist.
BraydenandBrynasMom 03-19-2007, 11:43 PM Its so nice when they validate your thoughts that something is wrong! I felt like we didn't need the formal eval at first myself - but then they found all sorts of things that I didn't realize was a potential issue. So hopefully the formal eval just helps make sure that they are catching everything with Sebastian so he gets the right help.
I have a folder for Bryna and two for Brayden (his grew too big)....It's one of those top two hold punch folders like the dr has...I type up history, specialists, diagnosis, ,medications, and significant changes in chonological history....I also ordered hospital records and ask for records from specialists so I have all lab work, test results, theapy evals, etc....and my own weight and height chart (they never chart the dots correctly when the doctors do it because they don't pay attention to their real age...) Sometimes no one looks at it - other times they want to see everything. I continuously update the "history"page though since it is always used when the nurse has to write down all their meds...I just hand it over.
I would really recommend others do it that don't already - And I would suggest getting official copies of hospital or procedure results. I was SHOCKED when I did it and found all sort of things that no one had bothered to tell me. Plus, now the specialists are finding it very helpful as they search for the origin of Brayden's problems...
Eliana's Mommy 03-20-2007, 07:59 AM WTG Mommy on taking this into your own hands. Eliana has a ST and DT right now. She had an OT but she graduated from that.
If you have any questions let me know :-)
stephiehatt 03-20-2007, 03:38 PM I am glad you decided to look into this Katey, despite what the ped. was saying.
I am curious though why they were worried that he doesn't use a spoon as everything I read says kids usually do this around 18 mos.+? Keegan and Dylan both are interested in the spoon but they just play with them right now, they are nowhere near feeding themselves w/one. Am I missing something here? I didn't think this was worrisome but Sebastian is just shy of being two months older than my guys so I was worried when I read that.

I am not sure. She just thew it in on her way out that he would get approved because he is not self feeding with a spoon. I was not at all worried about that, it bothers me that he wont eat off the spoon, but I was not expecting him to be feeding himself yet at all. I just want help with the not chewing thing, so I guess if that is what will get it I am happy.
Debbie 03-20-2007, 09:45 PM This is interesting to me cause i know I've mentioned before Jayden doesn't chew well either unless we are coaching him to....I wish Steph would get on the ball and call Early Intervention for him....My SIL is a therapist for Early on in Michigan...she lives near Lansing...she is an awesome person ...she suggested Jayden been seen as soon as she found out Jayden had reflux way back when....but Steph is pretty stubborn and didn't think it was necessary:violent1: ........Glad you got someone to take your concerns serious
