and hmmmm, just what we needed...another diagnosis!:hissyfit: They've now decided that Ava has a sensory integration disorder.
The OT who did our eval was about 5 mos prego and in that kinda "DUH" phase of pregnancy when you can barely form a sentence...does everyone remember that, b/c I def do! :rolling:
Until we can get the schedule coordinated, she gave us some exercises to do at home. We're going to try to schedule it so FT and OT will be back to back, so we don't have to spend ALL of our free time in therapy...just most of it!:evil4:
The GREAT news is this...the OT thinks that Ava's balance issues and her low tone and very awkward gait are directly related to her senses and the way she processes things...definitely NOT neuro!!!:yahoo: I could have just hugged her for saying that!
So, here's the deal: We're supposed to start a "sensory diet" (there's a gooogler for ya!) of brushing every 2 hours, sitting on the ball and rolling her off to the sides to get her (sort of) comfortable in other planes, joint compressions, deep pressure touch, and helping her get used to other textures. The OT noticed that Ava is very vertical...she won't even bend down to get a toy, she bends at the knees and stays very, very straight. She thinks that if we can get her used to other types of movement (on the ball, swings, etc) that we can help her balance improve, and we may start some PT as well.
She said we'll work on the dressing/self-care kinda skills later on, and I agree that this stuff is much more important. We're going to try to really link it in w/ the FT also, so we can kinda do a double whammy in both areas.
So, a good appt overall!!!!
