Catherine always wants help to get up if she falls down outside in the grass. She does not want, and has not ever wanted, to put her hands down in it. This evening when we were outside playing, she fell and asked for help. I told her to get up by herself. I could see the wheels spinning as she tried to figure out what to do. Finally, she closed her hands into fists and put her fists on the ground to push herself up.

She has always, since birth, used the backs of her wrists (with hands and fingers bent in toward her body) to push away things she doesn't want, food in particular. A friend told me this was her way of not having to touch whatever the offending item is.

Is this normal? Rhetorical question, really, but how abnormal is it? I actually thought it was pretty clever of her to use her fists to get up from the grass. She has problem-solving skills at the very least, lol!

I also noticed today, when she was pretending to be a puppy (the child has a fantastic imagination!), that she was crawling with her hands in fists. She didn't do that when crawling was her mode of transportation.

Lesley:

Sweet baby Catherine IS smart!!!! This is another example of why Miss Catherine is a classic SI kiddo. A majority of our SI kids are very bright and figure out ways to compensate for their SI dysfunctions. Some children with SI issues can go from one extreme to another if they cannot modulate sensory input. I am seeing either avoidance behaviors or Miss Catherine totally has a meltdown and her wheels fly off.

I did post directions about Wilbarger brushing Protocol about a month ago. I really think Catherine would benefit from this therapy.

Robynne ... brushing every two hours -- how does one manage this if one works full time? I can't see doing it once in the morning and once before bed having any value if the prescribed regimen is every two hours. Should we try it anyway?

Her wheels have been flying off all day today, and I'm about to sell her to the gypsies!
