View Full Version : just a question...
tamika 03-03-2007, 01:21 AM what would you class as a chronic cough? coughing fits about 3 - 4 times a day lasting about 15 seconds? and also could a baby stop breathing and turn blue due to asthma? is occasional wheezing and fast breathing a sign too? baylee is sesitive to smoke aswell. just wondering if he may have a asthma problem or maybe i am over reacting? the health nurses have always said that his breathing was funny over the phone when we called for advice and called an ambulance for us but by the time they get here his breathing is under controll. he also wheezes and gasps for air like hes not getting any sometimes after crying. i always thought it was just his GERD but maybe not... and is 3 months too early to try an inhaler or to try and get diagnosis from a doctor?
I suggest visiting a doctor. 3 months is definitely not too young for reactive airways.
your best bet would be to ask your pead about it did the nurses at the riverton centre say much about it
steveangela1 03-03-2007, 07:13 AM I agree with resr8r reactive airway could be an option at this age. Both of my boys had reactive airway when they were under 4 months old. THe oldest from an rsv infection and carson well his gerd and rsv.
I would also consider the fact that your baby has gerd, is your baby aspirating? I would def call the doc like lori said cause this is something that needs to be looked into.
scarlet 03-03-2007, 07:55 AM Tamika, in Australia, a GP will not diagnose asthma in a child under two, most peds won't either a specialist, ie a GI, ENT or Resp. one may do it earlier. Baylee though would be too young and I would be surprised.
When does he do the coughing, after a drink? In the middle of doing nothing, what prompts it, and what makes it better.
sixdogssixcats 03-03-2007, 08:59 AM Age 2 is fairly common everywhere for a formal asthma diagnosis, simply because infants/young toddlers can exhibit symptoms from so many illnesses that temporarily mimic asthma symptoms. Catherine has been treated for "asthma" since she was 6-7 months old, but she wasn't formally labled "asthmatic" until her 2yo check-up.
If Baylee's symptoms were to be treated with an inhaler, you'd need an aerochamber also. This is a tube to hold the medication while the child breathes it in. Infants and even most children aren't coordinated enough to use an inhaler alone and still get all the medication. Both Catherine and my 11yo son use aerochambers with their Flovent inhalers. The most efficient and effective medication delivery system, though, is the nebulizer.
tamika 03-03-2007, 09:10 AM he coughs out of nowhere and also while refluxing aswell as sometimes while feeding also alot at night and when lying on his back.nothing really makes it better he just gets over it after a while. he wheezes after crying. anything else i should be on the look out for? and with the aspiration theory wouldnt he get sick if he aspirates? the docs have never heard anything in his chest with the stethoscope thingy.
sixdogssixcats 03-03-2007, 09:22 AM Wheezing is actually very difficult to detect in an infant without a stethoscope. Most of the rattling or other sounds you can hear with just your ear, come from the throat. They may sound like like they're coming from the chest area, but that's generally because there is so little space between the throat and the chest in an infant and it's hard to tell exactly where the sounds are coming from.
scarlet 03-03-2007, 09:25 AM To me it sounds like the coughing is not asthma related yet, more likely reflux related. We were also diagnosed asthma early and confirmed with pH probe.
Imagine stuff coming up to your mouth, the instinct would be to cough KWIM? How long has he been on the losec? And did you take him off it? If so how long was he off it?
tamika 03-03-2007, 09:32 AM yeah i took him off it for about two weeks nearly now. he has been back on it now for 2 days. it wasnt working at all befor as i was told by ped to give suspension mixed with ribena so it was obviousely not effective. i didnt wanna keep him on meds that werent working. they hopefully will now though.
Debbie 03-03-2007, 12:27 PM I hope you get things figured out for him soon...

Then I would definately say it is the reflux at play. Give the new lot a really good try, at least 2 weeks, if not longer to see a great improvement, these meds take time to work. ANd unfortunately since you stopped it, it may take another full 2 weeks to see any improvement.
At least he likes the taste now, and I know that tutti fruitti is an approved flavour.
tamika 03-03-2007, 10:07 PM thanks scarlet, knowing that the flavour is approved has made me really confident in knowing that it will work. he has a real raspy cry and voice too. what could that be? he slept from 5 15 pm till 8 00 pm when we woke him for meds and then went back to sleep without a feed and then continued to sleep till 3 00 am so i think they may already be working!! i know there will still be bad days so i am not expecting it to continue like this permanently yet. and thanks everyone for all ur advice i will be asking his ped on monday.
