Sandifer's syndrome is a rare manifestation of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in children, occurring in association with abnormal movements of the head, neck, and upper part of the trunk.

It is important to realise firstly that Sandifers is a rare side effect of GERD, it is sometimes linked in with the normal arching or a reflux infant, the reason they arch is to elongate the esophagous so that the reflux material will not get as high. Though arching is not Sandifer's and should not be linked as the same. A true Sandifers episode will look almost fit like.

I don't beleive that Jon Robbie is exhibiting Sandifers, but normal arching and also loose head movement of a young child.

I think he is acting highly uncomfortable due to reflux coming up to his throat after feedings. Like Rachel said, he is trying to prevent it from burning his throat. My daugher used to turn her head to her left in the middle of feedings and did that until her reflux was under control.

What meds is he on?? I am sorry, but it was not in your siggy, so I don't know. Just wondering if may be you need an upping or a change of meds to eliminate all discomfort. He'll of course still reflux, but won't have the burn.

I don't know... there seems to be so much disagreement over what is and what isn't sandifer's (even within the medical community!).

Gorgeous baby though :)

Hi Renata... I agree... 3 different paediatricians... one said think about reflux (didn't say Sandifer's)... then when I researched she said that's why I meantioned reflux to you as I wanted you to think about it... Paed. Neurologist said likely sandifer's but I shouldn't have said that is what I was thinking about. She at least said not neurologic. My dad's paediatrician that he uses to send referral to said that true sandifer's is arching backward and he didn't know what my baby was doing but it didn't look serious he thought and baby likely would grow out of... thought might be a type of movement disorder. Great... All did see the cd or JR though. Thanks for your cute comment. My elevating bed isn't working anymore as he has been trying to crawl with head against pillows at night and usually tried to put his head lower than the elevation... more active... think I need to put him in crib at night. So worried that I have been unable to do so but good news is that with 1% and soy, juice out of diet head seems better... not many movements and basically hard to see unless you were me... just unsure which is culprit but likely both. How are you doing today? Better night? Lisa:smt036
