I just joined this message board today, because of my little guy Karl, but I thought I'd ask your opinion about my 6 year old daughter. Last year I took her to the doctor, she would occaisionally complain of chest pain, saying it felt like she had to burp, but that it felt funny (this was the best she could describe it). This all started after major surgery to reconstruct her left hip (she was born with a dislocated hip, which wasn't properly diagnosed, and has needed extensive treatments and surgeries to fix it). SHe spent 6 weeks in a body cast, and about a week after the cast came off, she began rubbing her chest after eating, and saying things felt funny. I wondered then if it was reflux, perhaps the cast was too tight or something. Her doctor diagnosed her, based on symptoms alone, with reflux, and prescribed zantac. She refused to take it, so I would break my own pills in quarters and she would swallow it in pill form (the doctor OK'd this). She seemed to get better and went for quite awhile with no symptoms, and I only gave her the pills for about a week, before she started to refuse them. Nowadays, about once every 6 weeks or so, I'll see her rubbing her chest, and she says it feels funny again. She says that when she burps, sometimes she throws up in her mouth and then swallows it.
Does what I just desribe sound like how reflux would present in an older child? She never had any problems as a baby, and never spit up.
TIA!

http://www.prevakids.com/index.aspx? this is a good site it has symptoms by age. You may want to get her to try the Prevacid asn the solutab tastes quite nice.

I would say that if the zantac was working it is reflux, zantac can only cure reflux and so if it was working, there it is.

It is possible to have reflux at age 6 and I think that more and more kids are getting diagnosed later, you may want to look on the site for foods to avoid for her, to keep the reflux at bay. Good luck, and let us know how she does.
