View Full Version : DGE Questions...
JenniferN 02-14-2007, 09:01 AM my daughter is having a gastric emptying scan tomorrow and I was just wondering if there is a big difference between this test & the upper gi with a small bowel follow through? Wouldnt they have been able to tell with those test?
Also, I am starting to think that Alexis does have DGE but tomorrow will tell. With your kids was vomitting a sign? and if so did the vomitting seem to get worse as the day goes on with more feeds?
I am having a hard time explaining what she does b/c it is differnet all the time but for the most part she starts her day off with a bottle (4oz) the 1st one she spits up after eating occasionally vomits after the 1st feed. As the day goes on her spitting up becomes very frequent & then she starts to vomit.... (She has spouts of vomit at different times it is never the same everyday) but seems to get worse as the day goes on until she goes to bed. Not sure if this is a sign of the DGE but I was wondering some of your expeirences with this???
Thank you very much.

anna1 02-14-2007, 09:09 AM Yes, this is a sign. Normally the first feeds go very well, but b/c their tummies don't empty well, it's like piling food on top of food, which in turn makes the reflux worse. Vomitting undigested food hours after eating is a tell tale sign. Hope the scan goes well!
nikkib 02-14-2007, 12:26 PM naomi has had both tests but this test is specifically designed as a "timed" test to see how long it takes for their tummy to empty. Naomis took 161mins when it should have taken 30mns apparently. that is not a good result. she stopped vomiting so much now, but doesn't have much either, but she refluxes all the time...
JenniferN 02-14-2007, 12:44 PM Alexis has had 1 bottle & 2 jars of baby food so far she will be getting another bottle in about 20-30 min. and she is already totally spitting up like every (5-10min) it is not vomit but if you were to add up all the spouts of spit up it is a lot(and the spit up is more spit up than i have ever seen a little baby do).... I know as the day goes on the spit up is going to turn into vomit (talking in size). I just hope that she keeps enough in to gain some weight so that we do nto have to put the tube back in.
My next questions is if she does have DGE is this something that she will grow out of; and what do they say the avg.age is? I have not really found any web sites that I have been impressed with. If you guys know of any that are helpful please let me know....
I am also concerent b/c Alexis has been making all of her milestones but now she is going on 6 1/2 mos. and she is still not sitting... When I try to have her sit on her own she gets mad and tries to throw herself back I am thinking maybe b/c her belly is uncomfortable..... My older 2 children were sitting by 5 Mos. this is so new & different to me...... Plus she still is not even showing signs of getting teeth my other 2 had 2 teeth by now I know that every child is different man is she ever.... :sad3:
Thanks,
Jen
anna1 02-14-2007, 01:14 PM I would talk your GI about a feeding schedule w/ the DGE to make sure you are not overfeeding and aggravating the reflux. He had us hold off on solids until 7 mnths and now we are only able to give him 4oz of solids 3x per day and more and it really upsets his tummy and aggravates the reflux. I think most children do outgrow it, but I don't know how soon. I would also talk to your GI about your concern. Also the spitting or vomitting the food hours after eating is a sign of DGE. I wouldn't worry so much about the sitting up either, I am sure she will when she is ready. Jack did not sit up until he was 7 months old, I think the pressure on his tummy just hurt to much. Anytime I put him in the bumbo, he would throw up and he is a silent refluxer. My ds got teeth at 6mths, but one of friends twin boys are 9 1/2 months old, reflux free and still have no teeth, so don't worry!
nikkib 02-14-2007, 09:13 PM don't worry, naomi would only eat that much in one day alot of the time and she didn't sit until 8 months and didn't get teeth until 10 months! you aren't too far behind. You need to get a stomach emptying test to confirm the DGE. I hope he doesn't have this as it is very hard...as for outgrowing it it all depends on what is causing it. some do some dont'
JenniferN 02-14-2007, 10:34 PM Thank you very much everybody.... She goes tomorrow at 9am for her test I will update tomorrow afternoon...
Leigh 02-14-2007, 11:03 PM Good luck with the test! Bring lots of stuff to occupy baby. ;)
I have a gastric emptying study or milk test to do with Iain on Friday.
As far as vomitting goes, I just wanted to point out that silent refluxers can have DGE as well and they do not yak up so it might be harder to determine a DGE issue. Iain was tested for DGE when he was 14 months of age and had it. His primary symptom seems to be skipping meals, so a feeling of fullness. He does reflux through the day, but nowhere near like he used to.
It is a good question if they can outgrow DGE and the answer is yes. It might be when a kiddo turns 6 months, 12 months, 145 months old. No one knows, but it is anticipated most children will outgrow it as they develop.
And I would not worry too much about the not sitting up. Iain would tumble forward at that age and really did not start sitting up nicely until he was between 8 to 9 months of age, I think. I know he was WAY later than my other two for that and yet he walked at 12 months of age. Every child is different. If you have regular ped visits then you can address developmental concerns at each visit to make sure he is in the realm of normal. Bear in mind, there is a huge range of normal. I will see if I can find our development thread...

Hope that helps a bit. Other threads for older children are located in the sensory intergration forum.
nikkib 02-14-2007, 11:24 PM i hope that the test goes well and you get positive results...keep us posted!!
JenniferN 02-15-2007, 02:09 PM Well we are back from the test.... She was an angel she feel asleep for a 1/2 hour of the test & was pretty calm the rest of the time....
The test went for 90 min. and her tummy was not completly empty when the test was over. She is already on Reglan .6ml. every 6 hours. Should her tummy have been completely empty by 90min? She drank a 4 oz. bottle. She did not vomit during the test but she did spit up 3 times but they continued test b/c she did not spit up that much.... We should have the results back tomorrow or Monday; I am not sure how much was left in her tummy...... How much left in her tummy is considered normal?
nikkib 02-15-2007, 04:53 PM hi. i am not sure what is considered normal, but a 4oz bottle is a lot, so I think it should be ok. Naomi only had about 20ml and it didn't empty for 161mins! that was considered abnormal. i am no doctor, but let us know the results on monday...i get the results of naomis scope them too, must be result day! hope all is well.
JenniferN 02-15-2007, 04:58 PM Thank you very mcuh and good luck to you too.... Let me know Naomi's results...
nikkib 02-15-2007, 05:01 PM i will and don't worry, it will be okay, no matter what, they may need to even change the meds. Naomi was on erythromycin at the time of her gastric emptying test and they are waiting on the results of the scope re. neuro probs with muscles in tummy, but will prob change her motility med. Hopefully that will work. I will be thinking of you until mond.
