Miki has a IRTI and was given ventolin and it did actualy help a lot the dr perscribed her ventolin and told me to use it when she seems to have breathing dificulty

just wanted your opinion is ventolin comonly used in infants that dont have asthma aparently she has reactive airways but i dont beleive that is actualy a diagnoses as they did nothing to diagnose it, she has had a few pneumonias and has the normal reflux cough

i gues my question is would you perscribe ventilion to miki? i trust you more than the GP

thanks for your time

Amy, they don't really have to do much to diagnose reactive airways. In fact, just knowing that the Ventolin (albuterol) gave her some relief is enough for some docs to make the diagnosis. Ventolin is used for lots of lung issues. Asthma and reactive airways both involve bronchospasm (which is what the Ventolin treats). Other things can cause bronchospasm, too. You mention Miki having pneumonia a couple of times. The inflammation and irritation caused by pneumonia and URIs can cause bronchospasm, so the Ventolin is appropriate. So, my opinion, she could definitely be having some bronchospasm and the Ventolin does seem to be helping, so stick with it. Ventolin is very safe and is used everyday in kids. My own daughter has been getting albuterol for the past month or so. You might notice some side effects with the Ventolin, though. Miki might get a little shaky or jittery and she may be a little restless. You may also notice that her heart rate may speed up a little as well. These are all pretty normal side effects, they usually go away after about half an hour. If she has lots of problems with side effects, ask your doc about Xopenex (Levalbuterol). It works just like Ventolin, but with fewer side effects. It's also LOTS more expensive.
I hope Miki's feeling better soon. She's having such a rough week.
