Hello,
My son is 3 months and he has trouble with BM and silent reflux. I noticed the MOM is a laxative and an anacid. I heard it was better than Mylanta and Malox bacause it doent have aliminum it in , is this true? If it is safe to use how much would I give a 16 pound 3 month old ?

Hi, MOM has magnesium hydroxide in it which causes diarrhea. Mylanta and maalox have aluminum and magnesium. The aluminum hydroxide counters the diarrhea caused by the magnesium. They are both good for antacid as well. If all you need is antacid then give the mylanta or maalox and skip the diarrhea side effect. If you have constipation with or without reflux then give M.O.M. For the regular strength (400 mg/tsp M.O.M. give 1/2 ml /kg/dose, which for your child is 4 mL daily at bedtime. and it should get things moving by the am. The dose is the same for the antacid use of M.O.M. 2.5 - 5 mL per dose for kids (up to 4 x daily). For you maybe less than 2.5 mL would be better. If giving maalox or mylanta, 1-2 mL/kG/dose after meals and bedtime. So for you stay around the pediatric 5-15 ml/dose.
