View Full Version : Taking care of Iain's "drinking problem"

Well, Bill and I decided it was time to get Iain off the bottle. :smt036 He much prefers it to using actual cups and sippy cups are a no-go. We use open cups for the most part, but he does often have problems with them. Anyway, we decided that his weight is back up and great and he is doing pretty good, so it is time for a wean.

We started it on the weekend. We are giving him fluid only in glasses and he was um... a tad upset. :hairpull: We discovered that the best thing for him to drink out of is the Danimals container itself. He does really good with them and seems to give us a lot less resistence for using them. In the morning he still uses the bottle for the half ounce of fluid he uses to take his prevacid capsule. At night, we are giving him straight water in the bottle only in hopes that he will give up soon. So far, he has not but we are early on yet.

Now in case anyone thinks we are crackers for having a 3 year old being weaned off a bottle I need to tell you that the bottle is pretty much the only way he will intake at times and we have relied heavily on them for overnight or sleepy feeds when he is undergoing one of his "going to live on air for the next few weeks" phases to boast up his calories. He will not take the freaking prevacid with a cup, only when we give him a bit of fluid in the bottle will he actually swallow. :hissyfit: We will work on this.

My other guys were off the bottle at 10 months (Walker) and 8 months (Curran) and I had visions of packing up bottles and liners for Iain to go to school with if we do not attempt to get rid of the bottle reliance now. :smt036 If he begins to drop in weight or needs the sleep feeds, I am going back to the bottle if necessary. We do what we have to do with these kids. I might be a bit neurotic about his losing weight, but I am OK with that. My neurosis, that is. ;)

So far, so good. He is trying and getting the hang of the little containers and hates big cups, although I KNOW he has the skills to drink from them. His fluid intake went down, way down on the weekend, but he has come up again today by using the Danimals containers. Our hope is that he will reduce fluid needs and replace with solids. So far, it ain't working, but then again it is early on yet....

Wish us luck.

Good luck!

I threw out D's bottles when he was 11 months, but that's because we both hated them so much.

Leigh, good luck and keep us updated on his progress. I am sure he'll get a hang of it in no time! WTG on your decision.

I hope it works and he wont have any weight set backs. Like you said stick with whatever works if you have to.

Iain has always favoured fluids over solids. He would at least dream feed for us, for the longest time it was the way he got over 80% of his intake when he was FTT.

I share your hatred of the highchair, Becky. I recall having conversations about what we wanted to do with them as our kids would NOT eat in them at all. ;)

Curran was my big time comfort feeder. Once he realized he could get MORE and FASTER from a cup, he was quite motivated to use one. :haha: We did not call him "Hoover" for nothing!

Yeah, Iain!!! Open cups are a total disaster here, but I never thought about those little yogurt bottles. Of course, she's never had a little bottle of yogurt either ... :toothy10:

Good luck!!

We have our own drinking problems here. But I'm too tired to go into it...

Keep us posted though!

Well, so far so good... he is doing quite well and adapting. I have to give him credit for persistence though... :hairpull: Tonight marked the first good dinner in weeks. :smt041 Overall though, intake is down. I am starting to think that reducing fluid at night is doing NOTHING to get him to eat more. As we are giving it a bit more time, I am hoping to have the definitive answer for this experiment on Iain in a few days.

I still have to use the bottle to get him to take some fluid to get down his prevacid. It is the only way right now and I am OK with that. And, he still gets it at night, but not as much and only water. Nutren jr. is only for skipped meals again. Wish us luck on that one as he always seems to go right down when we pull back on the supplement. **scratching my head over that one** Then again, it is because he has never intaken enough to keep himself going, so I should not be surprised I guess.

Vicky, please do post when you get a chance to let us know what is going on with you and your wee pumpkin. Sometimes, it just helps to talk about it.

LOL! I just posted about letting my son drink from bottles for waaay longer than he should have under a thread about being 'overprotective', but to Nate it was like a security blanket because drinking would help soothe the reflux (ironically he over ate).

I basically wound up with only one bottle and one nipple (threw others out as he's my last and would find them moldy under the couch -not worth the wash). I refused to buy more and the nipple was worn out to the point of being a big rubber hole but he would not give it up and would not let it out of his sight. I would explain it was dirty or in the dishwasher (and i would show him same) so he would consent to cups sometimes, and we kept that up for awhile until finally one day I just said I couldn't find it at all! He was po'd and we had to 'look for it' but when he didn't find it either, he gave in. For about a week he'd ask and I'd remind him we lost it. He'd glare at me while drinking his cup but he eventually forgave me.

The other day I was cleaning out my closet and it dropped on my head from the shelf where i had cleaned and stashed it 'just in case' we had to miraculously find it - i know if he knew it was 'found' he would insist on drinking from it to this day!

Good luck!

ah- won't let me edit for some reason - forgot to add - maybe you can take him to the store & let him pick out some new special cups just for him (make it a big deal) - can't hurt to try!
